Lewis Hamilton has kept up with performances despite being over 40 years old. The Briton recently shocked the paddock after securing a multi-year deal with Ferrari despite people considering him ‘out of prime’. Hence, ahead of Hamilton’s eminent debut, F1 pundit Martin Brundle shared his opinion over the seven-time champion ‘losing’ his edge.

Martin Brundle had previously ill-talked about Lewis Hamilton‘s chances at Ferrari claiming the latter to be out of his peak performance. The 65-year-old commented similarly this time around and questioned about the Briton still having the ‘edge’. Brundle didn’t hesitate to claim that the seven-time champion had ‘lost his edge’ due to his age of over 40 years.

Do I think the best of Lewis Hamilton is ahead or behind him? I think it’s behind him. I think he’s lost an edge with age, as you do.

Martin Brundle told Sky Sports.

Brundle recalled that Hamilton used to get into racing incidents and still come out on top. However, the 65-year-old reckoned that this wasn’t the case anymore as the Briton would just lose track positions after an incident. However, the Englishman highlighted that the 40-year-old with just 96 or 97 percent of efforts in a winning car was still good enough.

Sometimes he gets in scuffles that he used to emerge out the front of, but he doesn’t now, or he’ll make a mistake in qualifying. But I think 96, 97 per cent Lewis Hamilton in a winning car is still good enough.

Martin Brundle asserts ‘speed is present’ within Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton still scored two highly coveted race wins in the 2024 season despite facing struggles in performance from Mercedes. Martin Brundle recalled the high moments from Hamilton, notably at Silverstone and the victory in the British GP. Moreover, the 65-year-old pointed out the Las Vegas weekend where the Briton showcased a poor performance in qualifying. Regardless of the downfall, the Englishman reckoned that the seven-time champion still had speed within him in terms of performance.

Let’s imagine Silverstone last year, When he had a chance to win the British Grand Prix, he won it. He won in Spa but that was a little bit lucky because George got disqualified. Lewis was extraordinary all through practice in Las Vegas and then fluffed it in qualifying, something he didn’t used to do much, and then was extraordinary in the race. I think the speed is there.

Martin Brundle noted

Hamilton’s move to Ferrari will put forth a highly interesting situation for him as he might be able to contend for the championship after a drought of over four years. Moreover, Ferrari’s upturning performance is already a highly positive point for the 40-year-old. Hence, time will tell about how the deal pans out for the Briton.
