In Short
  • Max Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull until 2028 but is open about the possibility of retirement.
  • Martin Brundle believes Verstappen has enough financial security to leave F1 whenever he chooses.
  • Brundle suggests Verstappen is currently assessing his options based on Red Bull's performance with new regulations.

Max Verstappen has emerged as one of the better drivers in the modern era of Formula 1. The Dutchman boasts a long list of records broken and continues to etch his name in the record books. Now, amid the preparation for the 2026 season, Martin Brundle opens up on how Verstappen has earned enough money from the sport and can quit whenever he likes.

Despite having a contract with Red Bull that runs until the end of the 2028 season, Max Verstappen has never backed down from talking about his retirement. He even highlighted that the new regulations were pushing him more towards the end of his career. Martin Brundle believes that Verstappen might not be in the sport for the long run anymore and could quit earlier than people expect.

Martin Brundle highlighted that Max Verstappen remained one of the more unfiltered, easy to read person on the F1 grid. The Sky Sports commentator explained how Verstappen was always true in his take and did not sugarcoat his thoughts on retiring due to the uncertain regulations.

He’s so easy to read, he’s so unfiltered, He’s like ‘I’m not in this for the long haul. I am not around here. I’m not going to start chasing high-water marks in championship tables’.

Martin Brundle told Sky Sports F1.

Given Max Verstappen’s current rise to fame in Formula 1, Martin Brundle is sure that the former has more money than God. Hence, money wasn’t the sole factor that motivated the Dutchman to keep racing in Formula 1. Brundle continued that Verstappen found enjoyment in GT racing, sim racing, and many other facets. As such, the Briton believed that the 28-year-old wasn’t going to stick around for yet another decade.

He’s got more money than God already. So that’s not what’s going to define it as to whether he’s enjoying it or not. He loves his GT racing, he loves his sim racing, he loves all sorts of things. So I don’t believe he’ll be around in a decade.

Martin Brundle added.

Martin Brundle claims Max Verstappen playing ‘waiting game’ with Red Bull

Previously, Max Verstappen had revealed what kept him satisfied at Red Bull and pushed him to keep continuing his career with the team. Now, with the upcoming regulations in the 2026 season, Verstappen might finally think about a switch in teams, given that Milton Keynes performs poorly. As such, Martin Brundle reckoned that the four-time champion was playing the waiting game and would assess his options later on in the season.

Martin Brundle pointed out that Red Bull’s in-house power units, developed in collaboration with Ford, were very strong. Hence, Max Verstappen was playing the waiting game and seeing just how well the Austrian constructor fares against the rivals. Ultimately, Brundle raised uncertainity about the Dutchman’s plans, questioning whether he would take a sabbatical, leave F1 entirely, or continue racing for Red Bull.

It looks like the Red Bull Ford powertrain is strong, very strong. So I think Max is playing a waiting game. Do you know what? I wouldn’t want to bet what he might do, whether it’s a sabbatical, leave F1, or stick with Red Bull. But I think he’s in the luxurious position of being a genius talent and with perhaps the whole field available to him as and when he wants it.

Martin Brundle noted.

For now, Max Verstappen is intending on staying true to his contract with Red Bull. Certainly, it would be exciting to witness Verstappen end his career with the same team that gave him everything in Formula 1. However, if Milton Keynes fails miserably over the new regulations, then Verstappen could start considering his other options and think about an early exit from the pinnacle of motorsport.
