  • F1 commentator Mark Gallagher believes Hamilton has many competitive years left, drawing comparisons to Fernando Alonso.
  • Hamilton's future with Ferrari may be questioned if the team performs poorly in the 2026 season, facing intense media scrutiny.

Lewis Hamilton has been backed by many people to not retire and keep racing in Formula 1, atleast for the 2026 season. The Briton feels refreshed after returning from the summer break and is looking forward to the challenge. Now, infamous F1 commentator Mark Gallagher has backed Hamilton amid the retirement noise following a nightmare debut back in 2025.

Speaking on retirement previously, Lewis Hamilton had reassured that quitting was not in his plans anytime soon. The seven-time champion requested his fans to stick with him, as he rediscovered himself at Maranello. Now, Mark Gallagher draws a Fernando Alonso comparison, claiming that Hamilton has many more years left in him to keep racing in Formula 1.

Mark Gallagher reckoned that the previous struggling years were because of the extreme pressure on the team to perform well in Formula 1. Hence, he believed that 2026 could be make or break for both Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton. Further, Gallagher hopes to witness Hamilton in his true form from the previous season and not just the 2025 season alone.

[The] pressure factor has been responsible for a lot of Ferrari’s struggles over the years. So, this could be something of a make-or-break year. Let’s hope we see the Lewis Hamilton of previous seasons rather than last year’s version, and this isn’t the last year we see him in F1.

Mark Gallagher told express.co.uk.

Apart from this, Mark Gallagher asserted that Fernando Alonso was racing in Formula 1 despite being well over in his forties. As such, Gallagher did not see any reason why Lewis Hamilton couldn’t keep racing for the years to come. However, the 63-year-old accepted that he wouldn’t keep racing if the car wasn’t competitive enough and he had no realistic winning chances.

As Fernando Alonso has proven, you can continue driving in Formula One into your forties these days. I don’t see any reason why Hamilton couldn’t do that, but he won’t want to continue if he’s not competitive and not driving a competitive car.

Matt Gallagher reveals condition where Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari future “will be questioned”

Ferrari suffered from a disappointing season in the final year of the ground-effect era. The team was unable to salvage any race wins over the year, and thus ended Lewis Hamilton’s career-worst year. Now, Matt Gallagher believes that if Maranello does not perform well, then Hamilton’s continuation will be under scrutiny for the near future.

Matt Gallagher noted that Lewis Hamilton’s future will be questioned if Ferrari does not have a bad year in 2026. He continued that there was intense pressure on the Italian squad from the media and organization. Gallagher revealed that no other team on the grid was subjected to so much noise in the media as the Scuderia was.

If Ferrari does have another bad year, then his future will be questioned. The scrutiny from the Italian media and internally within the organisation and board of directors is intense. No other Formula One team faces that level of pressure. It doesn’t matter how much criticism other drivers receive — it’s different at Ferrari.

Matt Gallagher noted.

The 2026 season is seemingly exciting for Lewis Hamilton and Co. so far. He has achieved some notable results in the pre-season test. Moreover, Ferrari has come up with an innovative but ambitious rear wing design. Now, the season opener in Australia will reveal the full picture. It will be interesting to witness how Hamilton manages to perform well and start the season on the best possible note.
