In Short
  • Max Verstappen criticizes the overly complex 2026 F1 regulations and states it's too late for changes.
  • Formula 1 risks losing its core audience due to the new rules, which have been finalized ahead of the season opener.
  • Despite concerns, Verstappen expresses optimism about Red Bull's performance and the overall driving experience with the new regulations.

The 2026 F1 regulations have not been received kindly by a majority of the drivers on the grid. Max Verstappen has remained one of the biggest critics of the new regulations and how they are overly complex. Amongst many others, Verstappen now makes a concerning remark that it is too late to see any positive changes to the rules, and drivers will have to get used to the challenge.

The teams and drivers had already criticized the new regulations long before the testing had concluded. However, Formula 1 ignored these comments and went ahead with the new rules anyway. Now, the sport risks losing its core audience, especially because of the overly complex regulations. Max Verstappen had already pointed out that the fans might find it difficult to understand everything going on in a race.

But now, it is too late to change anything for the 2026 season. Max Verstappen is of the opinion that because of the investments made into the season, it was going to stick around for some time. Formula 1 cannot backtrack on its decisions, as it could further lead to other problems for the sport, especially with the sponsors. Moreover, the 24 races of the calendar have been locked in and finalized as well, with the season opener being just a few days away.

Max Verstappen continued that the stakes were now higher than ever in the 2026 season. As such, it was now too late to bring about any changes to the rules. Regardless, the governing authorities will closely monitor the situation and make quality-of-life changes throughout the year. For now, the first race is the priority, as it will help see the full picture for the teams and the drivers.

Everything, the amount of money that has been invested as well into these regulations, it will be around for a while, Suddenly, now things are raised, it’s a bit late.

Max Verstappen said, as reported by Reuters.

Max Verstappen reveals ‘positive surprise’ from Red Bull’s RB22 challenger

Red Bull has taken on the massive challenge of developing their own power units from the 2026 season onwards, in collaboration with American giant Ford. The team did not have massive expectations heading into the pre-season testing. But their running was error-free, and they accomplished a lot of laps over the multiple sessions. As such, Max Verstappen is now delighted with the positive indicators so far and is looking forward to the challenge.

Max Verstappen asserted that he was really positively surprised with how everything went for Red Bull. Verstappen continued that the rules remained complex for everyone on the grid, but the overall driving experience between the car and engine was good. Now, the Dutchman is looking forward to the challenge and hopes to extract the maximum performance out of the car.

I was really positively surprised with how basically everything felt, also, the rule changes have been really complex for everyone, but in terms of the feeling in the car, the driving experience between the engine and the car was good. Looking on the performance side of things, I think we want to be a little bit faster.

Max Verstappen noted.

Despite the negative feedback so far, the 2026 season is looking exciting in terms of racing action. All the teams will start afresh and work on development from the ground up. Certainly, the teams will manage expectations in the initial few races. Subsequently, they will work on their pace and hope to keep up the positive momentum for the rest of the regulations.
