Max Verstappen won the 2024 Drivers’ Championship despite facing massive performance struggles throughout the season. Red Bull’s inferior pace against McLaren and Ferrari caused the team to lose the constructors’ championship as well. Verstappen highlighted the ‘bad thing’ about the team’s woeful performance in the season despite winning the championship.

Red Bull tried their level best to improve in performance throughout the season with upgrades. The team reportedly ignored Max Verstappen‘s input with the issues that caused the imminent downfall. The Dutchman claimed that he predicted the ‘complications’ he would face in the championship. Despite Milton Keynes dominating the first few races, holding the lead wasn’t as easy as interpreted.

I knew it would be a complicated World Championship. Even after that good start, not everything was as easy as it seemed.

Verstappen recalled that despite winning the first three races, the team was aware of the bigger problems impending. Red Bull upgraded multiple parts of the RB20 chassis which did not improve the pace of the challenger at all. Hence, the reigning world champion noted that the ‘bad thing’ was that Milton Keynes did not understand the issues.

After three victories, we knew we had a bigger problem. The bad thing was that we didn’t understand what was going on.

Max Verstappen ‘unsure’ about winning 2024 title with Ferrari

Ferrari showcased a decent improvement in performance especially with the constructors’ championship contention until the last race of the 2024 season. The Italian constructor scored five coveted race wins against McLaren’s dominant campaign. Woking had the fastest chassis on the grid and still faced issues in winning the title.

Max Verstappen reckoned that he would’ve easily won the championship with a McLaren chassis. The Dutchman highlighted that he could’ve possibly won the championship even before he did in the 2024 season with the MCL-38. However, the 27-year-old wasn’t as confident in winning the title with Ferrari’s SF-24.

Yes, I would have definitely won before with an MCL38. On a Ferrari, however, I wouldn’t be so sure.

Max Verstappen noted

Red Bull has a mountainous task of improving pace and performance ahead of the commencement of the 2025 season. The team has undergone a massive personnel change and would have to work hard despite the changes. Hence, the final season before the 2026 changes might be an interesting outing for the energy drink manufacturing team in Formula 1.
