The 2026 F1 regulations have been met with intense debate and criticism. Amongst many others, Max Verstappen has been at the heart of these bold claims. After claiming that the new regulations were pushing him towards retirement, Verstappen now predicts confusion and chaos impending in the 2026 season.
Certainly, all the teams and drivers will start everything afresh under the new regulations. Everyone goes back to zero, as everyone will start working on developing their power units from the very first race weekend. However, Max Verstappen had already raised some critical remarks about the 2026 regulations, as he now claims that the sport might not be as enjoyable to spectate for the fans.
Max Verstappen pointed out that the newly introduced regulations remained overly complex, not only for the drivers but also for the people watching the race from their homes. The 28-year-old highlighted that it would be difficult to follow and explain for the fans. Though everything was still the usual business in Formula 1, it would take some time getting used to for everyone.
It will be complicated to follow and to explain. That’s the main thing. In the end it’s still a Formula 1 car – a race car – and we will still qualify and race. But it will take some getting used to for everyone.
Max Verstappen told Viaplay.
Further, Max Verstappen raised concerns over the overtaking, which many other drivers believed was bound to be a nightmare. The four-time champion noted that there were many question marks regarding the upcoming regulations and their effectiveness on racing action. Nevertheless, Verstappen was excited for the challenge and finally had a reason to tune in and give it his all on the track.
Also in terms of overtaking. I honestly have no idea yet how that will play out. So there are still a lot of question marks for all of us. On the other hand, that also makes it interesting, because it gives you a reason to tune in.
Max Verstappen added.
Max Verstappen “hopes” to remain in championship contention in 2026
Despite suffering from multiple disappointing circumstances in the 2025 season, Max Verstappen remained in the championship battle. The four-time champion was able to close a gap of over 104 points down to just two points by the season-finale in Abu Dhabi. As such, for the upcoming season, Verstappen hopes to remain in contention and keep fighting for the title as long as possible.

Max Verstappen accepts that it will be difficult to predict his championship chances in the 2026 season. He noted that it was hard to assess everything at the moment, especially considering Red Bull’s massive task of preparing its own power units. Ultimately, Verstappen hopes for things to turn in his favor and help him fight for his fifth title in the pinnacle of motorsport.
Hopefully for a long time. But that’s always very difficult to predict. Everything is a bit hard to assess at the moment, including where we stand. Hopefully it will all turn out better than expected.
Max Verstappen noted
The 2026 season is looking exciting and promising so far. Despite initial concerns by the drivers, they are definitely going to adapt well to the new regulations. Max Verstappen will also get around the problems and start performing much better results in the coming races. Certainly, the full picture will be visible following the culmination of the season opener in Australia. Until then, all teams and drivers are managing expectations and preparing for the impending challenge.
