The Qualifying for the Australian GP is now underway. However, Max Verstappen started the weekend on a disappointing note. The Dutchman suffered from a collision in his very first outing on the lap, during the out-lap. Disappointingly, Verstappen has crashed out in the Q1 session and does not have a great start to the 2026 season.
Max Verstappen had continued to criticize the 2026 regulations for being overly complex. Even during the Australian GP practice sessions, Verstappen was unable to achieve notable results. The Dutchman was seen complaining about the car’s performance during the initial practice sessions. Now, the Saturday session is off to a disappointing start for the four-time champion.
During his out-lap in his very first outing on the track during the Q1 qualifying session, Max Verstappen suffered from an alleged rear-axle lock. While exiting Turn 1 of the Albert Park circuit, Verstappen lost control of the car and spun onto the gravel, ultimately hitting the barriers. Though the car seems structurally fine, it will not be recovered in time to participate in the session anymore.
That was not a driver error, how often do you see Max Verstappen making a fundamental error?
David Croft said on the Sky Sports F1 commentary.
Following the crash, Max Verstappen immediately took to the radio to showcase his frustration from the incident. As per the 28-year-old, his car suffered from a fundamental error and locked up while committing to the first turn. Verstappen highlighted that the rear axles were the point of error and ultimately caused him to crash his car.
Yep, the car just **** locked on the rear axles. Fantastic.
Max Verstappen said on the team radio.

Max Verstappen suffering from sprained hands in the aftermath of the crash
Certainly, the collision was a big one, but Max Verstappen thankfully got right out of the car. The Dutchman was seen walking out of the car and looking at his hands. Though there is no confirmation yet, sources claim that Verstappen might be suffering from sprained hands in the aftermath of the crash. If true, the four-time champion’s race running could take a massive toll as well.

Max Verstappen will start the race from P20, as two other drivers were unable to participate in the qualifying session because of mechanical issues. Despite positive indicators over the practice sessions, Verstappen suffered from a disappointing end to the very first race of the new regulations. Now, all eyes will be on race day, where the 28-year-old will be expected to make a great recovery drive.

Verstappen might have to visit the medical center for a check after such a critical crash. Given the current condition, the Dutchman might not be delighted with the situation. However, the 28-year-old has achieved podium finishes despite starting the race from all the way back in P18. The four-time champion will have to work very hard to move up the pecking order. Certainly, this might put him on the backfoot of the championship fight even before the first race begins.
