Max Verstappen put his RB20 on pole position for the Qatar GP. Unfortunately, the four-time world champion was forced to start from second place after a one-place grid drop. Now, Verstappen has asserted that he does not want this to become a precedent in F1.
The Red Bull driver was given a grid penalty after being unnecessarily slow during Qualifying ahead of George Russell. Though, it must be noted that Russell was on a cool down lap when this incident took place in Lusail. The four-time world champion even felt provoked over this saga.
Max Verstappen confessed that he feared this penalty might become a norm in Formula 1. The Dutch driver labeled the grid drop ‘ridiculous,’ insisting that he was just on a slow lap. The 27-year-old emphasized that he did not want to impede any driver on-track.
Max Verstappen ‘hit a wall’ in discussions with Race Control
The Red Bull driver went to the stewards to discuss the penalty after Qualifying. Max Verstappen claimed that he essentially hit a wall while trying to explain what had really happened during the session. The Dutch driver was simply not happy with the way things were handled during this discussion.
Max Verstappen managed to win the Qatar GP after taking the lead at Turn 1. The four-time world champion will be looking to forget this incident as F1 heads for the season finale in Abu Dhabi. Verstappen would be hoping to end the season by winning his tenth race of the year.
