Max Verstappen‘s driving on the grid this year has remained under scrutiny as he continues to face struggles with the RB21 challenger. The Dutchman is seemingly unable to compete with the superior pace of McLaren and is getting desperate to defend his spot on the grid. Verstappen’s elbows-out driving style, coupled with the desperation to improve his position, has caused him to suffer from a couple of unwarranted penalties. Now, the 27-year-old has reassured everyone that he follows the rules well and isn’t knowingly causing trouble to others.
Max Verstappen is known for his exceptional understanding of the rules and regulations in terms of driving on the grid. Although Verstappen’s driving seems borderline dangerous, he still remains well under the allowed limit of the rules. The Dutchman’s erratic driving at the Miami GP received a lot of frowned faces as he narrowly avoided a penalty after a close call with Lando Norris in the early stages of the race.
Now, Max Verstappen has taken a stand on his driving style and backed himself up. The Dutchman points out that he is well aware of what is allowed and what isn’t in terms of driving on the track. As such, every driver was just trying to adjust to the ever-changing rules and regulations of Formula 1. Verstappen just knows the rule book very well and can exploit some gray areas to gain a minuscule advantage against the rivals.
I think it’s quite clear what is allowed and what isn’t allowed, so I think everyone is adjusting to that.
Max Verstappen told The Race
Despite the overregulation of driving on the F1 track, Max Verstappen still believes that he’s got it all figured out. The Dutchman reckoned that he personally would leave the rules more natural and not make them too restrictive. Regardless, the 27-year-old follows the rules too well and avoids any penalties despite the people making a big deal of his driving style.
I don’t know, for me it’s always better to leave it more natural. But I just follow the rules.

Christian Horner lambasts ‘overregulation’ amid Max Verstappen controversy
Red Bull’s team boss and, in some ways, Max Verstappen’s confidant has also taken a jibe at the ever-changing rules of Formula 1, particularly involving wheel-to-wheel racing. Christian Horner believes that the sport is continuing to make changes to the rules, which might ruin the natural essence of racing. As such, the 51-year-old wishes that harsh racing be allowed on the track with a little creative freedom for the drivers to increase the excitement at the forefront.

Christian Horner feels that Formula 1 and the FIA are overregulating the wheel-to-wheel racing on the track. The 51-year-old joins Verstappen’s chain of thoughts and reckons that the racing is starting to feel unnatural at this point. Therefore, Horner questions if a little bit of reset to the rule book would increase the fun of pushing the cars to their limits in Turn 1. The pinnacle of motorsport is continuing to grow in the forward direction, but at some point, it might get too much, as the sport would need to take a step back and evaluate the situation.
It doesn’t feel like natural racing anymore. Maybe it feels like we’re becoming overregulated in the wheel-to-wheel racing because they’re racing to different lines. It’s becoming quite unnatural. So I don’t know whether we just need a little bit of a reset.
Christian Horner told The Race
Regardless of the people’s belief, Max Verstappen has continued to remain the same in terms of his efforts to score good results on the track. Verstappen driving, although considered dangerous, is what defines him and has helped him achieve over four coveted drivers’ titles. Hence, the 27-year-old will keep up with similar efforts in hopes of gaining the littlest of the advantage against his rivals on track.
