Max Verstappen had a controversial 2024 season. The four-time world champion found himself at odds with the FIA over a ban on swearing. The sports governing body has only intensified the crackdown this year. Nevertheless, the Red Bull star remained calm ahead of the 2025 season.

The latest rule changes by the FIA increase the scope of penalties for criticizing decisions. A driver can even face a race ban in certain situations, or a hefty fine. F1 drivers’ association has claimed that they were not consulted before these guidelines were formulated.

Max Verstappen was asked if he’ll adjust himself to the new rules. The reigning world champion joked that he was not concerned as it would only make him speak less. Verstappen had resorted to simple one-word responses after he was penalized for swearing.

It’s fine because then I get to speak less. That’s fine with me!

Max Verstappen advises FIA to focus on issues other than swearing

The Red Bull star has never been in favor of banning swearing within the paddock. Max Verstappen even labeled the latest change as ‘extreme.’ The four-time world champion asserted that it would be better if the FIA invested more time in issues such as safety or better cars.

I think in general it’s a bit extreme. I don’t think it’s necessary and I’d rather have that we invest this time in other things in the sport, whether that is safety or how we can build better cars, things like that. I think it’s better to invest your time into that.

Max Verstappen explained

It seems that Max Verstappen is in no mood to change how he behaves in the paddock despite the increasing pressure from the FIA. The 27-year-old will be more concerned about his results on-track. Verstappen aims to win a fifth consecutive F1 world title with Red Bull this year, something which even Sebastian Vettel failed to do.
