Max Verstappen has achieved historic success in Formula 1 in recent years. The Dutch driver simply annihilated his competition in the sport’s ground-effect era. However, so far Verstappen has stayed away from racing in a different category despite expressing his interest in the past.
The three-time world champion recently claimed that he had been in contact with a few teams over a possible entry into the Le Mans 24 Hours. However, the current ‘Balance of Performance’ regulations kept Max Verstappen away from racing in the historic race. Nevertheless, the Dutch driver remains open to the event in the future.
Additionally, Max Verstappen has already made it clear that he won’t stay in F1 till he’s 40. Rather, the reigning world champion has achieved all his targets at the pinnacle of motorsport with three world titles to his name. This pegs the question, Can Max Verstappen go for Motorsport’s triple crown?
Max Verstappen could follow Fernando Alonso’s footsteps in attempting to win the triple crown
The unofficial motorsport ‘triple crown’ comprises of F1’s Monaco GP, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Indy 500. So far, only late F1 legend, Graham Hill has managed to win all three races. While McLaren is the only constructor to bag victories in all the three events. Fernando Alonso was the last F1 driver to attempt to win the triple crown. As the Spanish driver failed twice in the Indy 500 despite winning in Le Mans with Toyota.
Like Fernando Alonso, Max Verstappen has won the Monaco GP already. The three-time world champion’s interest in Le Mans hints that the Dutch driver could participate in the historic race in the future. Verstappen is currently only 26, this leaves him ample time to try and secure a victory in the 24 hour race.
Max Verstappen might not have showed interest in IndyCar so far. The Dutch driver could be inclined towards taking part in the Indy 500, especially if the 26-year-old manages to win Le Mans in the future. A top IndyCar team such as Chip Ganassi or Penske would undoubtedly welcome Verstappen with open arms. Perhaps, McLaren could even entice the three-time world champion to join the Woking-based team with a chance of racing in Indianapolis.
Certainly, Max Verstappen would likely try to achieve the triple crown and solidify his name in the history books. However, fans would need to wait for quite some time. As it seems that the three-time world champion is fully focused on continuing his success at the pinnacle of motorsport for the time being.
