When F1 teams rolled up to Monaco, Max Verstappen and Red Bull seemed to be the favorites to secure the pole position. However, as the weekend transcended, the RB20’s deficits started to come up to the surface as the car had a loose rear end. This was subsequently seen during qualifying as the Dutchman was wringing the neck of the RB20 and made contact with the barrier at turn one.

Max Verstappen equaled the record of Ayrton Senna in Imola for the most consecutive poles in a row. Furthermore, it was expected that the 26-year-old would surpass this record around the principality. However, to his dismay, Red Bull had pace woes around the 3.3-kilometer circuit and was unable to mount the curbs the way their rivals were able to.

During Q3, the Dutchman charged into Sainte Devote but clashed with the barriers on the outside, wasting his lap.

I f***ing hit the wall. Oh man, this car is so slippery.
Max Verstappen said over the radio

The 26-year-old was on a mission to claim the pole around the principality. However, this came to an abrupt end as he collected the barriers, and subsequently, lashed out on the radio claiming the car to be slippery, which could be disastrous for him come race day.

Christian Horner explained the difficulties of Max Verstappen in Monaco

Despite his difficulties during qualifying, the reigning champion did not suffer the fate of his teammate, Sergio Perez, and made it into Q3. However, team principal, Christian Horner later explained the reasons behind the underwhelming qualifying performance.

The Brit admitted that this weekend would be a struggle for the team.

It's been a struggle all weekend. The car doesn't suit the track. Between second and sixth was on for us, but unfortunately, we couldn't finish the lap.
Christian Horner said post-qualifying

The 50-year-old claimed that the car did not suit the track well. However, he had remained optimistic that Verstappen would be able to claim a spot on the front row at least. However, with the Dutchman’s lap coming to an abrupt end, Red Bull was not able to achieve a better qualifying position and had to settle for P6 on the grid for tomorrow.

On the other hand, with Red Bull’s massive slump in performance, Ferrari and McLaren grabbed the opportunity with both hands and claimed the first four spots on the grid. Moreover, the home driver, Charles Leclerc, seems to be ecstatic about his winning chances as he will line up on pole, and fans could be in for a thriller around the streets of Monaco.
