Max Verstappen won the Spanish GP despite not having the fastest car. Red Bull started the season very strongly with their RB20. But it seems the cards have now been shuffled differently as they’re not the only one with better car.

Max Verstappen was asked about RB20’s progress, he said it’ll take some time to fix the car issues. However, The reigning world champion believed when the teams heading towards the correct direction with their developments, then improvements can happen rapidly. Verstappen mentioned Red Bull made good progress initially, but at this stage everyone has brought upgrades to their cars. This has made the situation tougher for Red Bull to make significant advancements quickly.

Not something that can be solved quickly. If you go in the right direction, then things can move fast. We were already in that process and now we’re a bit more difficult to make really big steps.

Verstappen admitted that it was very obvious other teams had made progress compared to Red Bull. The Dutchman said, the team was focused on improving the car to handle curbs and bumps smoothly as well as refining car’s overall balance. These aspects was crucial for the team to close the gap and improve their performance on the track. Max Verstappen claimed that Red Bull recognized these challenges and are dedicated to make improvements through their efforts.

At the moment, it is clear that the others have made bigger progress than us. Now we still need to work on the handling of the car over the kerbs and bumps and work on the balance.

Max Verstappen hopes for a similar weekend to Barcelona with some more speed

Max Verstappen was asked about the next race which is in Austria, he is aiming for a better weekend with increased speed compared to last race. Last week in Spain, Red Bull had a regular weekend, however the three time world champion felt they were too slow initially. They made adjustments throughout, and fortunately, things improved slightly during qualifying. Verstappen highlighted the team worked throughout the weekend to steadily improve. Currently, the team aimed to use this progress as a base to perform even better in future races.

We had a normal weekend [last week] and were just too slow. You constantly try to make adjustments and luckily it felt a bit better in qualifying, but it was simply about normal progression over the weekend.

Verstappen mentioned that in previous races, things didn’t go smooth for Red Bull. The team cannot afford to make those mistakes further. The 26-year-old is optimistic about the upcoming race in Austria. He hoped that it will be as positive as their performance in Barcelona with faster speed to their car. Verstappen and Red Bull are aiming for a clean and strong weekend where the car performs better and they must avoid the issues they faced before.

Before that we had some messy weekends and we can't afford that anymore. I hope for a similar weekend to Barcelona, only with more speed.
