Max Verstappen has been working alongside his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase ever since his Red Bull debut mid-way through the 2016 season. The driver-engineer duo has achieved over 71 race wins and four world championships over their career.

Now, Lambiase suffered from some personal issues and had to miss out on a couple of races in the 2025 season. As such, Verstappen opens up on the sticky situation that GP is in currently, though not revealing the exact details.

Gianpiero Lambiase was spotted crying following Max Verstappen‘s disappointing title-defeat by just two points to Lando Norris. Although Verstappen asked GP to keep his head up high, claiming that he was proud of the results, the latter still couldn’t hold back his emotions. Due to the personal issues with Lambiase, he was rumored to work in a more senior position at Red Bull and not be a race engineer anymore.

However, GP confirmed that he would still work alongside Max Verstappen as his race engineer for the coming year. Now, Verstappen has showcased empathy towards Lambiase, revealing that the latter has had a very difficult year and was still suffering from issues. The Dutchman accepted that he did not understand how difficult it was for the race engineer to continue his F1 job and deal with his family issues.

He has had a very difficult year and still does, That is very difficult. Actually, I didn’t quite realise how hard that is for him to do his job and continue life at home. I don’t know, that’s very hard to describe.

Max Verstappen said via Viaplay.

Max Verstappen acknowledged that he was too busy with racing and couldn’t really do much about Gianpiero Lambiase’s situation. Verstappen even tried to do everything he could to help GP out in his difficult times. Though the Dutchman can arrange almost anything to help his race engineer out, Lambiase’s ‘sh**ty situation’ meant that he had to deal with it himself and power through it.

You’re busy with the racing, but you can’t do anything about it yourself either. I asked: ‘Do you need anything? If you need something, say so, and then we’ll try to arrange it.’ Anything needed can be arranged. But it’s just a s**tty situation.

Max Verstappen reveals why he couldn’t meet GP after emotional Abu Dhabi GP loss

Gianpiero Lambiase remained in the background during Max Verstappen’s victory celebrations at the Abu Dhabi GP. The race engineer was quite hurt by the fact that Verstappen didn’t win the title and lost it by just two points. Though the Dutchman knew about the emotions GP was going through, he couldn’t meet with him privately and discuss the entire situation.

Max Verstappen recalled that he saw how emotional GP was following the season finale in the 2025 season. Verstappen revealed that the Briton always took race losses personally and was hurt when he couldn’t quite achieve the best result possible.

The Dutchman noted that he wanted to go meet Lambiase, but he couldn’t as there were way too many people and it was chaotic, especially after his victory at the Abu Dhabi GP.

Of course, I also saw that he was very emotional, He always takes it very personally that we didn’t win, and after the race, I actually really wanted to go to him, but there are so many people and chaos, then you can’t find a moment to do it.

Max Verstappen noted.

Despite Gianpiero Lambiase’s personal issues, he powered through the 2025 season very well and gave it his all to the team and Max Verstappen. The Briton has emerged as one of the greatest race engineers and forms an indomitable force with Verstappen. Certainly, everyone in the community would be glad that GP is going to stay atleast for another year in 2026.
