- Max Verstappen criticized the new F1 regulations, calling them overly complex and detrimental to racing enjoyment.
- He warned that the current rules could alienate core fans and risk the sport's future if not addressed.
- Verstappen acknowledged the political nature of regulation changes, as teams benefiting from the rules may resist modifications.
Max Verstappen was one of the many drivers who suffered from a disastrous weekend in China. The Dutchman was unable to run up front the entire weekend and ultimately suffered from a DNF in the Chinese GP. As such, Verstappen lamented the new regulations and issued a warning to the FIA over the problematic regulations of the 2026 season.
Since the beginning of the new season, Max Verstappen has not sugarcoated the situation. He clearly talked about how the regulations were overly complex and could make racing less enjoyable. Now, the first two races of the 2026 season have witnessed over six or more drivers suffering from retirements in the race because of mechanical or electrical component issues.
Now, Max Verstappen noted that he had to be a bit careful with his words while lamenting the situation. The Dutchman reckoned that the FOM and the FIA were understanding where the drivers were coming from. Verstappen accepted that some would think that the regulations are good because they were winning races, which was fair enough.
You have to be a bit careful with how you say things, but we are talking about it, I think they [FOM and FIA] understand where we are coming from as drivers, and I think I speak for most of the drivers. Some, of course, will say it’s great because they are winning races, which is fair enough.
Max Verstappen said, as reported by RacingNews365.
However, most of the drivers and the fans had far from ideal remarks on the new regulations and the racing they created. Max Verstappen pointed out that those fans who seemed to like the new rules were those who did not understand racing in Formula 1. Ultimately, the four-time champion called for getting rid of these complex regulations.
You know, when you have an advantage, why would you give that up? Because you never know if you’re going to have a good car again. But if you just speak to most of the drivers, it’s not what we like. I don’t think it’s what the real F1 fans like. Maybe some fans like it, but they don’t understand racing. But hopefully we can get rid of this.
Max Verstappen added.
Max Verstappen reveals ‘political aspect’ of the 2026 F1 regulations
A majority of the drivers have made concerning remarks about the new regulations and the racing it creates. Max Verstappen fears that if the fans keep watching the races, it might set a precedent about the 2026 regulations being good enough. However, Verstappen doesn’t want this to happen, but he accepts the political aspect of these things in Formula 1.

Max Verstappen accepted that not everyone, but a majority of the people, had to agree to make changes to the regulations. He highlighted that this matter was political, as teams that were performing well did not want to change the rules. Ultimately, Verstappen declared that it wasn’t a good situation for the sport as it risked losing core audiences, especially because of the complexity.
I hope they don’t think like that, because it will eventually ruin the sport, It will come and bite them back in the ass. Of course, not everyone needs to agree, but most of the people have to agree to make changes. But, like I said, it’s political. Some people feel they have the advantage now, and, of course, they want to use that, rightly. So I get that. I mean, I’m not stupid, but at the same time, if you look at it, for the sport, it’s just not good.
Max Verstappen noted.
For now, Mercedes seems to be the only team that has the performance unlocked to the maximum under the new regulations. Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren seem to be lacking against the title leaders. Even at the Chinese GP, both Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris suffered from a DNS, with Verstappen ultimately ending the race with a disappointing retirement.
