Oscar Piastri, the McLaren F1 driver, is one of the most exciting young talents on the modern grid. He has been a part of the papaya outfit since last year and has impressed one and all with his sensational performances.
However, because of his relatively little experience in F1, he is still learning his trade in comparison to his established teammate, Lando Norris. Andrea Stella and Co. have been keeping tabs on Oscar Piastri’s 2024 graph and ahead of the Spanish GP, Stella has given a positive verdict on the young Aussie.
As per the McLaren boss, there has been an impressive acceleration in Piastri’s development since the Chinese GP.
After China, we looked at what we had learned in the first part of the season together with Oscar’s engineers. There’s always underlying development, but in this case, both in terms of pure speed, which you can see in qualifying, And in terms of race craft, I think we have seen Oscar competing at a very high level and, like I say, an acceleration in his development.Andrea Stella said in an interview with RaceFans
Looking at the reaction of the 53-year-old, it is quite clear that he is immensely pleased with how Piastri is developing at McLaren. Stella genuinely feels that the 23-year-old has started performing at an extremely high level since the Chinese GP.
McLaren requires the ‘best package’ to win regularly
While Stella has showered immense praise on Piastri, McLaren’s CEO, Zak Brown has admitted that his team needs to come up with the perfect package to win regularly. The Woking-based team has so far amassed only a single Grand Prix win this year.
Lando Norris amassed his maiden and McLaren’s first win of 2024 at the Miami GP.
If you look at Red Bull the last few years, they’ve had the fastest car. They’ve had the least amount of tyre deg. They’ve had the best pit stops. They’ve had the complete package to win on a regular basis. So, I think we have two great drivers. We clearly have a very fast race car. We have very good pit stops but have room to improve.Zak Brown said in an interview with Thescore
The ongoing campaign is already nine rounds down and there are still 15 Grand Prix remaining on the calendar. Keeping this in view and that McLaren is currently in third place in the Constructors Championship, they have work to do going ahead into the season. The developments on the MCL38 will decide whether the papaya outfit will be able to challenge for the world championship or not.
