McLaren’s 2024 season has been extremely rocky and difficult in terms of the number one driver decision. Both Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris have put forth some impressive performances. However, Norris has a realistic chance of fighting for the world championship amidst Red Bull’s struggles. Hence, Zak Brown pointed out the difficult condition at McLaren following the Briton’s Singapore GP win.
McLaren faced multiple controversial situations among the team members due to prioritizing one over the other for race wins. Multiple individuals have berated Woking for prioritizing Oscar Piastri over Lando Norris amidst the latter’s championship chances. Zak Brown reckoned that the team approached every race weekend strategizing to prioritize the driver ahead in qualifying.
We approach every weekend, have a strategy for each day and where the drivers qualifying set the strategy for the race.Zak Brown said during the post-race interview
Apart from this, Brown declared that McLaren had decided to prioritize Lando Norris after he scored the pole position. However, in general, Woking will also have to put the Briton first in terms of team order. Hence, the McLaren CEO highlighted that this decision was ‘difficult’ to arrive at since Paistri’s season would be sabotaged due to this.
We will try and help Lando without compromising Oscar, which sounds difficult to do.Zak Brown added
Oscar Piastri ‘thanks’ the team for the Singapore GP despite not prioritizing him
Oscar Piastri has continued to focus on his performances despite the entire situation between Lando Norris and the world championship. Hence, the Aussie was glad to finish on the podium after a difficult and warm race in Singapore. Additionally, the 23-year-old thanked the team for an ‘exceptional’ car over the weekend.
Warm is how it was! No, it was a good race, a good recovery from qualifying - it wasn't my best afternoon yesterday. Big thank you to the team as clearly the car was exceptional this weekend, and some great points.Oscar Piastri said during the post-race interview
