Uncertainty has loomed over Sergio Perez‘s F1 future for the majority of the 2024 season. Despite winning a two-year extension from Milton Keynes, Checo has remained at risk of losing his seat. The Mexican GP seems to have only made matters worse for the 34-year-old.
Perez failed to deliver at his home race last weekend. The Mexican driver was stuck in the lower half of the pecking order and battled RB’s Liam Lawson. Lawson is considered to be the driver who could replace Checo as early as next season.
Sergio Perez and Liam Lawson had a public fallout after the race. Though, the Kiwi driver apologized for showing the middle finger to Checo. Nevertheless, it seems that Perez’s F1 career might be on its last legs after last weekend’s race.
Sergio Perez solely the reason for Red Bull’s drop in championship
Scuderia Ferrari has overtaken Red Bull in the F1 standings. Milton Keynes is now 25 points behind Maranello, and a whopping 54 points behind championship-leaders McLaren. This can be credited solely to Sergio Perez’s underwhelming season as Max Verstappen still leads the drivers’ standings by 47 points to Norris.
The financial cost of falling from first to third in the championship would be a major blow for Red Bull. The Austrian giant would not be willing to face another situation like this in the future. Moreover, the fact that Perez was stuck battling Lawson showed that the RB driver might have what it takes to replace the Mexican driver.
In 2021, then-Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas had an incident with Mercedes junior George Russell at Imola. This is believed to have swayed the Silver Arrows to replace Bottas with Russell for 2022. Perhaps, a similar situation might happen at Milton Keynes with Lawson knocking at the door.
Red Bull has not made any direct comments on the future of both drivers. However, Milton Keynes is known to make shock driver switches at a moment’s notice. As such, fans could expect to see Perez bid farewell to Formula 1 by the end of this season.
