‘A real chance at a win tomorrow’: Lewis Hamilton optimistic about his chances in the Singapore GP

Charles Leclerc will start in pole position for his second Singapore Grand Prix in a row, but it could well have been Lewis Hamilton. Leclerc, Sergio Perez and Hamilton were only separated by about 0.054 seconds between them. So close, yet so far. Instead, the Briton will start P3, still his best qualifying result of the year.

On the other hand, his Mercedes’ teammate George Russell suffered a shock Q2 elimination, with him being eliminated from qualifying by 0.006 seconds. With Max Verstappen down in P8 in a track not known to be particularly overtake-friendly, Hamilton may be in for a chance to finish in the podium places, or perhaps even the win.

The one trend that has usually remained consistent is the fact that Mercedes have almost always performed better in the races than they fared in qualifying. If this continues, Hamilton should probably have a long shot at the win as well. That is unless Max Verstappen does what he did in Belgium, Monza or Hungary. Again.

If Lewis Hamilton had been able to put it on the pole, it would have been unexpected, to say the least. Regardless, the Briton performed consistently good in the various qualifying sessions. It would likely have been reminiscent of his absolutely stunning pole lap in Singapore, back in 2018.

This time there is no championship to fight for, unfortunately, but there is still a lot at stake. Mercedes are not a lot behind Ferrari in the Constructor Standings, and they would certainly like to snatch that away from the Italians. And for that, both drivers will have to give their maximum.

Lewis Hamilton took to Twitter to talk about his hopes for the race: “Starting P3 tomorrow, a lot we can do from the second row. Car felt great out there for most of it and it feels like there’s a real chance at a win tomorrow. Thanks always [Mercedes], heads down, see you tomorrow.”

Hamilton being in contention for the victory is an extremely exciting prospect, and one fans will be hotly anticipating. The Briton hasn’t had much joy towards that end, and he would dearly love to take his first win of the season on Sunday.
