The four-time F1 World Champion, Sebastian Vettel has been facing a lot of criticism in the sport after Aston Martin’s poor start this year. Vettel joined Aston Martin after the team’s rebranding from Racing Point in the 2021 season, prior to that, Vettel was in Ferrari, but was replaced by Carlos Sainz. Aston Martin was a competitive mid-field car in the 2021 season, where Vettel even managed to score a podium in Azerbaijan, and the team bagged 77 points from both Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel, and finished 7th in the championship. However, with the regulation changes this year which have changed the aerodynamics of the cars mainly, many teams have been having a hard time to cope, and so is Aston Martin.

Although the car is not competitive enough, it is Vettel who is being blamed race after race, but Mike Krack, the team principal of Aston Martin, thinks otherwise. He stated that the German has been improving and adapting to the car better, as we saw in the Monaco Grand Prix, “a top performance from the first lap,” Mike stated, GPBlog quotes. Vettel somehow managed to finish 10th in the Monaco GP and score a point in a race that was filled with chaos. His teammate, Lance Stroll, finished 14th in the same race, almost a lap down to the leader.

“You have to try to keep him,” Vettel remains first choice after exit rumours

There have been rumors flying around after Vettel’s performance until now that the team (Aston Martin) might be interested in signing a deal with Mick Schumacher for the next season. Mick still hasn’t scored any points in his F1 career (which started in 2021 with Haas). Both Stroll and Vettel have their contract ending this year, but the departure of Stroll seems unlikely because his father, Lawrence Stroll, a Canadian businessman, owns the team. So, if the team would be taking in a new driver, it would be Sebastian who would be replaced. No confirmation of any sort, however, has been given by the team, but Krack states that when you have a driver like Sebastian Vettel, you have to try to keep him; clarifying that Vettel is still his first choice for the team.

“If you see him in a debriefing or on the phone, how he is there: someone who doesn’t want to drive doesn’t act like that,” said Krack, who is still, evidently, impressed by Vettel’s performance after Monaco. Vettel remains 15th with 5 points this season, the team stands 9th in the standings with 2 more points from Lance Stroll.
