Adrian Newey is often regarded as the best Car Designer in Formula 1 history. Newey has constructed World Championship-winning cars for multiple teams like Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull. The RB19 – Red Bull’s 2023 car has not only outperformed every other car by a considerable margin but is also in contention for being one of the best cars ever, with Max Verstappen as the pilot.

Newey spoke to SkySportsF1 about the 2023 season and claimed this year has passed easily and comfortably. He said, “This has been one of the easiest, one of the less stressful ones. That’s for sure. We have developed a really great technical team over the years.”

The Legend, furthermore, went on to describe how delightful it has been to work at Red Bull and gave insight into the team’s inner workings. Newey added, “We have tried to run a flat structure and encourage cross-communication. We try to make it a fun place to work.”

Red Bull’s domination is what the 2023 season will be remembered for. The Milton-Keynes-based outfit has won all but one race this year (16 of the 17 so far). It should be noted that there are still five races to go. Undoubtedly, the Red Bull garage will want to end the season on a high and prepare for 2024.

Adrian Newey explains Red Bull’s frequent driver changes

While appearing on the Beyond The Grid podcast, The designer commented upon Red Bull’s troubles finding a worthy teammate for Verstappen. Newey commented upon the past few teammates that Max has had and why they don’t seem to fit into the team.

He said, “I think Alex [Albon] struggled to come to terms with how quick Max was, as did Pierre Gasly and others examples, so if you’re going to have two teammates where one is exceptional and the other is brilliant but not quite at that level, the other one needs to be somebody who will, at some point, accept that he certainly can’t beat Max, for instance, on pace, you’re going to have to do it in some other way.”

Newey suggests that Max Verstappen’s ideal teammate needs to understand that he’s on the team to play as the second fiddle. If this perfect teammate wants to challenge Verstappen, he must figure out how to do it himself. These comments explain why Red Bull has been struggling to find a proper teammate for Max, as Newey’s suggested profile is quite a hard find.
