Williams Racing had an underwhelming start to Formula 1’s ground-effect era in 2022. The Grove-based team was usually the slowest in the pecking order. The British team has made considerable progress this season under the new Team Principal, James Vowles. Now, Alex Albon has revealed the pace of the iconic team in terms of its rivals.

Albon had surpassed expectations at the Dutch GP after Qualifying fourth in his Williams. The other Williams of Logan Sargeant also made it to the Top 10. Alex Albon scored four points for the Grove-based team after finishing P8 in the race. The Thai driver was convinced that the British team could now challenge Aston Martin and Ferrari.

The 27-year-old said, “I think we were on par with Aston and Ferrari this weekend.” The Thai driver mentioned that he could overtake a Mercedes on the pure pace of the Williams car. This was a testament to the pace of the car at Zandvoort as Albon made a swift move on George Russell. He explained, “We overtook a Mercedes… To overtake on this route, you have to be one to one and a half seconds faster than the person in front. And we did it anyway.”

The Thai driver was one of the highlights of the race weekend at Zandvoort. The incredible pace of the Williams car surprised the entire grid, with even the Mercedes works team feeling the pressure from its customer squad. The 27-year-old claimed the Dutch GP weekend to be his best at the British team. Alex Albon stated, “It was our best weekend so far.”

However, there is work left to be done back at Grove if Williams wants to continue scoring points this year. Rivals such as Aston Martin and McLaren are working extensively on new upgrades that would further shake up the pecking order. As such, Alex Albon’s team must ensure that they can sustain these new-found gains for the coming rounds as well.

Thus, Alex Albon has claimed that Williams had the pace of Ferrari and Aston Martin at the Dutch GP. The 27-year-old had a great weekend at Zandvoort as he qualified on the second row for the race. The P8 result for the Thai driver would indeed boost the morale of the Grove-based squad as they try to make their way up the pecking order.
