AlphaTauri set to investigate Yuki Tsunoda’s struggles in Hungary

Yuki Tsunoda finished the Hungarian Grand Prix in P19 and since then the Faenza-based team is trying to find out the reasons why the Japanese driver struggled.

Yuki Tsunoda started the Hungarian GP from P16 ahead of his teammate Pierre Gasly who started from the pita after taking new elements on his AT03. However, despite that, the Frenchman was able to finish in P12 whereas Tsunoda fell backward and ended up last.

The 22-year-old after the race was himself baffled about his outing and while stressing over it said, “It’s been a really difficult day, it didn’t feel like I had much of a race.”

I struggled with the car throughout, as I had absolutely no grip at all out there. I was finding it so difficult to keep it on the track and made a small mistake which meant I spun.”

This weekend has not been an easy one, we need to go away and look at all the data to understand why the upgrades we have are not paying off in the way we thought they would.”

“We’ll have a reset now over the summer break and then look to come back stronger for the second half of the season.”

Pierre Gasly had a better outing than Yuki Tsunoda in Hungary

While Tsunoda struggled in Hungary, Pierre Gasly despite starting from the pits was able to charge through the pack to land his AT03 in a respectable P12 at the end of the race.

AlphaTauri had a mixed outing at the Hungaroring and their Technical director, Jody Egginton while stressing about the team’s perplexing outing said, “We had mixed fortunes as a team.”

Pierre drove a very strong race, from a pit lane start, making good use of the Soft and Medium compounds to come home 12th.”

Unfortunately, Yuki had a far more difficult race, struggling with grip and balance in every stint and generally not being happy with his car.

“Although no issue was evident from the telemetry, we need to conduct an investigation to get to the bottom of this.”

AlphaTauri is not in the midfield conversation this season and this has come as a huge surprise for the Red Bull sister team. The team’s package is just not good enough and after seeing Yuki’s struggles in Hungary, the team is worried and wants to get on top of their problems before the start of the second leg of the season.

Moreover, Egginton has also indicated that the Hungarian adventure was not all bad news for the team as they saw a lot of positives coming from their outing in Budapest.

Looking at the bigger picture, although we have not achieved the target of getting back to scoring points again here in Hungary, the race pace shown is positive, and with a better starting position we could have potentially delivered points with Pierre, which is a good sign.”

“Equally as important though is the amount we have learned about the upgrade here which, when combined with the next updates, will hopefully move us forward another step.”

AlphaTauri is hopeful of making a strong comeback after the end of the summer break and considering that they are 8th in the Constructors Championship, how much of a leap forward would they be able to make?

Will they be able to get ahead of rivals Haas and Alfa Romeo during the second leg of the season?
