Last season, the Haas F1 team finished eighth in the constructors’ championship. They were only one place behind Aston Martin. Things have changed now as the UK-based team took a giant leap forward this season. They are now challenging the front runners and are only behind the dominant Red Bull. Meanwhile, Haas are still stuck in the midfield, and their driver Kevin Magnussen wants them to take a “big step” like Aston Martin.

In Formula 1, there are leading teams, midfielders, and backmarkers. This season, the midfielders and backmarkers are closer than ever. It is safe to say that the battle has become increasingly close. Haas boss Guenther Steiner previously stated that there is no midfield anymore. He added that there are top teams and the rest of the grid. The new addition to the top teams this season is Aston Martin.

Kevin Magnussen spoke about Haas’ 2023 car and his desire to move forward like Aston Martin. He stated, “We knew we were going to take a step with the car this year and we were confident about that and it shows on the track. Other teams have just done a really good job, too. we’re still in that mix of the midfield. Of course, we would love to be towards the top, taking a big step like Aston Martin. But that’s what we’ve got to aim to do in the future.”

The Haas driver added, “Every year we talk about how close it is this year, and certainly this year it’s taken a big step again towards being more close. So I think it’s not going to be the case that you get to the first race with a car and you see where you are and you stay there the whole year and every race you know you’re fighting for P8 or P9 or whatever.”

Magnussen believes that it is vital to get things right for the team. He hopes the team will finish P8 or P7 in the upcoming races. The 30-year-old called it “best of the rest,” referring to the lack of pace to match teams like Red Bull, Aston Martin, Ferrari, and Mercedes. However, he cannot contain his surprise that Aston Martin have closed the gap to the front. Due to that, he claims it is a different grid this season.

Kevin Magnussen wants Haas to improve and cites Aston Martin as an example. Over just one winter break, the team shocked everyone on the grid by securing 4 podium finishes in the first five races of the season.

Last year, Haas introduced only one major update due to cost-related issues. But they plan to introduce more upgrades this season. They started in Miami by bringing a new floor, and Magnussen snatched the last point by finishing 10th. It is only the first update, and there are more to come.
