Aston Martin’s start to the 2023 season was the stuff of dreams as Fernando Alonso stormed to the Podium in the first three opening rounds. The British team, who finished last season at P7, sky-rocketed to P2 in 2023. Since being overtaken for that sweet runner-up sport by Mercedes, Aston Martin sets aim for it again.
Following the Italian Grand Prix, Aston Martin sits at fourth place after Ferrari claimed P3 with Sainz and Leclerc finishing P3 and P4. Tom McCullough, when asked about how the team plans to line-up for the remainder of the season, replied “The target is to try to get back to second in the constructors’ championship, that’s a brave target, against some fierce competition.” Ferrari and Mercedes are the obvious competition as the other British team in the paddock – Mclaren is over 100 points behind.
Eight Grands Prix remain as Aston Martin set aim for P2 in the constructor’s. Alonso has been their calling card until now and they’d be hoping for Stroll to join in. Getting Aston to be bridesmaids behind Red Bull doesn’t sound like a single driver’s job.

Aston Martin is said to ‘only play with Lionel Messi’ as Lance Stroll is criticised
Joan Villadelprat, former Formula 1 team boss, has commented on the performance gap between Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso. Villadelprat believes Aston Martin cannot only bank on Alonso to bring in results everytime. He made an analogy of a football club playing with arguably the greatest player in history. Villadelprat said, “With Fernando Alonso in the team, Aston Martin is playing only with Messi. They need someone else to help him because they are not going to win with only one driver.”
Fernando Alonso has been the guiding light for Aston Martin this year while Stroll hasn’t even landed himself a podium finish yet. The British outfit will need to act upon Stroll’s performance if they are to dream of finishing runners-up to Red Bull this year.
