F1 Azerbaijan GP – WATCH: “Tell Max it’s a motor race” Fans react to furious Max Verstappen’s radio outburst on George Russell
Max Verstappen slammed George Russell for the British driver's controversial overtake on the Red Bull.
The incident between Max Verstappen and George Russell at the Azerbaijan GP
The Azerbaijan GP is the first Sprint weekend of the 2023 F1 season. Things went off to full swing as George Russell passed Max Verstappen into turn 3 at the start of the race. The Mercedes had a better start than the Red Bull and pulled off a close move as the two made contact. Verstappen was left fuming in his cockpit.
The Dutchman was furious after George Russell passed him in what the two-time world champion considered an unfair move. Verstappen’s race engineer further made the situation worse for the 25-year-old. After the Red Bull driver was informed of floor damage from the incident. Max lashed out on the team radio about not understanding how the British driver could keep his position for this move.
Verstappen stated, “Did he really drive into the side? I don’t understand how he can keep the position and is damaging my car. It’s kinda ridiculous.” The 25-year-old wanted to get back the position or perhaps have Russell penalized for the move. However, for now, Max Verstappen was given no choice but to try and overtake the Mercedes for P3 of the Sprint race.
Luckily, the Dutchman managed to make a clean move and overtake Russell shortly afterward. This was celebrated in a rather sarcastic tone by Verstappen and his engineer. The engineer said, “Lovely job max without contact as well. Nicely done.” Max took a dig at the Mercedes driver and replied, “Yeah I know how to do that.” However, Max got up to P3 behind Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc.

“The immediate Max whining” – Fans react over Max Verstappen’s outburst
Fans on Twitter were quick to point out the frustration of the two-time world champion. One user brought up the famous phrase uttered by former Race Director Michael Masi at the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP. After the Dutchman passed Lewis Hamilton. The user wrote, “Tell Max it’s a motor race and they went car racing.” While another blamed the 25-year-old for whining on the team radio. The user replied, “And there’s the immediate Max whining….”
Moreover, one user alleged that Max Verstappen could simply not stay content when another driver passes him. The user commented, “He cries a lot when he’s not leading.” However, one fan mentioned that any driver would’ve complained in such a situation and not just the reigning world champion. The fan said, “People complaining about Max complaining he got hit, like every other driver wouldn’t do it as well.”
Thus, Max Verstappen was furious after George Russell overtook the Red Bull driver in a controversial maneuver. The two-time world argued that the British driver could not keep his position after inflicting damage. Despite not hearing from the stewards, Verstappen managed to get his position back fair and square in a move without making contact.
