F1 Azerbaijan GP – WATCH: “I Am Stupid Part 2?” Fans react as Charles Leclerc clinches Sprint Pole despite crashing on his final run
Charles Leclerc will start from Pole for the Sprint race despite crashing out during the shootout.
Charles Leclerc, Azerbaijan GP
The Azerbaijan GP debuted the new F1 Sprint format. Under the new format, the drivers went on a shootout to get the pole for the Sprint race. However, things were bittersweet for the Ferrari garage as Charles Leclerc achieved P1 for the Sprint race but brought home the car with a broken front wing. With the Monegasque driver collided with the barriers.
Leclerc has had a good weekend so far at Baku as Ferrari bounced back from a rough early 2023 season. The Sprint shootout was going well for the 25-year-old as he lapped the fastest in SQ3 for the provisional pole. Unfortunately, Charles Leclerc could not keep it clean during his final run of the session, with the Monegasque binning it to the wall while pushing the car to the limit.
Yet, Leclerc managed to not only drive his car back to parc ferme without a front wing. But the Ferrari driver even stayed ahead of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez in the timesheets as the two Red Bulls were no match for the Monegasque. Subsequently, the 25-year-old will start from the first grid slot in the Azerbaijan GP Sprint race.

“Leclerc be like: if pole, hit wall” – Fans compare Charles Leclerc’s pole crashes
Fans on Twitter were amused by the Ferrari driver’s crash. One user mentioned how this was a continuation of Charles’s famous “I am stupid” crash at this very circuit in 2019. The user replied, “I Am Stupid Part 2??? At least he got pole.” Another fan wrote how the Monegasque driver always ends up having a crash when he is on his way to get a provisional pole. The fan commented, “Leclerc be like: if pole, hit wall.”
Moreover, one fan replied with Valtteri Bottas‘s ‘traditions’ meme in reference to Leclerc’s crashes being a usual affair in such scenarios. Similarly, another user referred this incident to be rather unsurprising, considering Charles Leclerc’s history with provisional poles. The user replied, “This the most Leclerc thing to ever happen to Charles Leclerc; post the fastest time and then bin it into the barriers.”
Thus fans found Charles Leclerc’s crash unsurprising as they believed this to be a recurring thing for the Ferrari driver. The 25-year-old has crashed on a couple of occasions at this circuit. Subsequently, the Monegasque driver will have to take things cautiously during the F1 Sprint to keep his car away from further trouble before the Azerbaijan GP on Sunday.
