Nyck de Vries after crashing out during the Azerbaijan GP Qualifying

The Azerbaijan GP weekend is underway. The Baku race adopts a new F1 Sprint format, with Qualifying for the Sunday race on a Friday. However, things have gone off to a disastrous start for Alpha Tauri as Nyck de Vries crashed into the barriers during Q1. The Dutchman ended his session as he struggled to keep it clean in the tight streets of Baku.

The 28-year-old was on his first timed lap of the session. Subsequently, de Vries tried to give his everything to progress into the following round. However, the Dutchman misjudged the braking point and waited too late to get on the brakes and, as such, went right into the barriers in Sector 1. A red flag was called to clear the debris from Nyck de Vries‘s incident.

The Alpha Tauri driver was struggling with brake issues during the start of the session as Nyck stated on his team radio before this crash. He said, “Alarm is still there, I have brake by wire off. What did i do?” The team agreed that this was a problem as his engineer replied, “Ok Nyck We have an issue, P1 Back to P1. We try to solve it in the garage.”

This is similar to Nyck’s teammate, Yuki Tsunoda‘s crash in Qualifying for the 2022 Azerbaijan GP. However, the Dutchman’s incident has put a spanner in the works for his team. As the Red Bull sister team has had a rough season so far in 2022, with pressure mounting up on the Faenza-based team to improve on its results. De Vries will have a chance to have a better stint on Saturday for the F1 Sprint.

Fans on Twitter quickly expressed their views on the incident. Most fans made a pun on de Vries’s name and called the Dutchman ‘debris’ after the infamous teammate radio by Carlos Sainz. One fan wrote, “Now its Nyck Debris. :P” while another user was glad to get an opportunity for this joke finally. The fan said, “We can finally make the debris joke.”

On the other hand, one user mentioned how Red Bull junior, Liam Lawson would have contacted Dr. Helmut Marko to replace de Vries after this incident. The user replied, “Liam Lawson just sent a text to Helmut Marko.” Similarly, another fan stated how Nicholas Latifi’s spirit lives on in F1 in the form of the Dutchman with this crash. The fan said, “You got rid of the man [Nicholas Latifi]… not the idea…”

Thus, this brings an end to Nyck de Vries’s Qualifying. The Alpha Tauri driver will have to start the 2023 Azerbaijan GP from the back of the grid. Although the Dutchman might get a chance to salvage a decent result during the F1 Sprint on Saturday. For now, its a disappointing time for the Faenza-based team that needs to rectify the brake issue.
