Bernie Ecclestone finds no logic in the rumors that Ferrari would sign Lewis Hamilton for $50M
Bernie Ecclestone has commented on the possibility of Lewis Hamilton shifting to Ferrari with a $ 50M deal.
Seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton has been on the quest for his elusive eighth F1 title since 2020. The last time he had a Grand Prix victory was at the Jeddah GP in 2021, and last year became his first and only winless Championship season in his entire F1 career spanning around 16 years. On the other hand, Mercedes have also experienced a sudden dip in their performance after eight consecutive World Constructors’ Championship wins till 2021.
Lewis Hamilton’s surprising lack of speed at the Grands Prix in recent times and Mercedes‘ failure in giving the 38-year-old a Championship-worthy car has raised a few eyebrows in F1 town. Now, fans are urging the Briton to shift to some other team in order to grab an eighth F1 title that will break Michael Schumacher’s record. And during such a time, the Italian news outlet La Gazetta dello Sport has reported that Ferrari are going to attempt to bring Lewis Hamilton to Italy with a massive $50M contract.
Lewis Hamilton’s contract with Mercedes is coming to an end this year, and Toto Wolff, Team Principal of Mercedes, as well as the Briton himself have said they expect to agree to an extension on the contract. But Ferrari’s new offer to Lewis might bring more drama to the table. But former F1 owner Bernie Ecclestone doubts the legitimacy of the news concerning the Maranello outfit and Lewis. He said, “I would be surprised that Ferrari would want to get rid of Leclerc to sign Lewis because they are very much in love with Leclerc.”
Bernie Ecclestone gives his opinions on the two ways Lewis Hamilton’s future might go
Bernie Ecclestone has been associated with Formula 1 for decades, so he has an idea about when it would be appropriate for a driver to shift teams. And he does not think it is the right time for Lewis to do so. He commented, “Lewis has said that when he does decide to stop he would still want to be connected with Mercedes so it would surprise me if he wanted to leave. Ferrari is not a retirement home either. They want to win the world championship more than anyone. So personally, I think he will stay at Mercedes, or he will retire.”
In other news, Lewis Hamilton is currently gearing up for an outing at the Monaco GP where he stands a chance to win the street race. Should Lewis achieve the feat, it will make him a four-time Monaco Grand Prix winner, and it will take him into the same elite group as Alain Prost. But when two-time World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi was asked to pick his top 5 Monaco GP winners, Lewis Hamilton was snubbed from the list completely, despite having won the race three times already.
