“Best qualifying of the year,” Pierre Gasly credits his ‘simple’ approach for his impressive result in Baku

Pierre Gasly

Pierre Gasly has been one name that has been in the news more for his switch to a different team rather than his performances. The Frenchman has not been able to match the standards by him last year. That’s down to more teams competing in that midfield battle, Gasly’s average driving and the rub of the green not going his way at times. Monaco could be seen as an example where he was marred by bad luck.

We all could see that Pierre Gasly clearly had the pace in Monaco and could have definitely scored some points but a pretty unlucky qualifying session saw him not able to make it into Q2. Some smart strategy and courageous driving brought him back into the mix but was just not enough to fetch him some points. The Frenchman has a total of 6 points which is 21 points lesser than what it was at the same stage last year.

But, that hasn’t let him drop his shoulders and we saw a glimpse of the same determination during the Azerbaijan GP qualifying. Gasly was flying during qualifying as he secured P6, which also happens to be his best qualifying result of the season. The 26 year old placed himself between the two Mercedes of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. Alpha Tauri must be elated with the result as they qualified ahead of both Alpines and McLarens.

This qualifying session will give Pierre Gasly a world of confidence, who revealed the reason behind the success. Talking to SkyF1, he said, “Yeah, I must say I’m really happy. Best qualifying of the year.”

“We showed some really good pace all weekend, but we did the same in Monaco and didn’t get it right in qualifying.

“So it was important to keep everything simple, and that’s what we did. And to split the two Mercedes was clearly better than what we had hoped for. So, good position for tomorrow,” reported planetf1.

This is a circuit which Pierre Gasly has enjoyed racing on and therefore it become imperative to build on the qualifying success to secure valuable points which would enhance his repertoire if he decides to make the jump to some other team.
