Ferrari superstar Carlos Sainz doubts the team’s ability to reproduce their performance from the Canadian GP in the upcoming Austrian GP. Following a disappointing qualifying session last week, Ferrari showcased an impressive comeback as Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz secured P4 and P5, respectively in the race despite starting P10 and P11.

Despite this strong performance, speaking to RacingNews365, Carlos Sainz is unsure how well they will perform around the Red Bull Ring. He said, ” Our pace in Austria will depend a lot on the characteristics of the circuit, our pace varies a lot depending on that. We see places like Monaco or Canada we are stronger than places with higher speed corners like Barcelona, where we struggle a bit more, so I think we will see variations in our competitiveness.”

“I knew Barcelona wasn’t a good track for us, and that Canada was going to be better. It was confirmed on Friday pace, that lower degradation circuits and ones with slower speed corners we are stronger at, and [it meant] we could show a bit more our true pace [in the race],” Sainz added. He is unsure of when the Scuderia can achieve stability and overcome their inconsistent phases.

The favorable result of Ferrari in Canada was partly attributed to the circuit’s characteristics, which included fewer high-speed corners compared to tracks like Spain. The presence of various chicanes, hairpins, and long straights contributed to their success. Additionally, Ferrari’s effective strategy played a crucial role in helping Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz bounce back from their poor qualifying.

Charles Leclerc, on the contrary, is confident of a podium in Austria

With his last F1 victory at the Red Bull Ring last season, Charles Leclerc holds optimistic expectations for the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix. However, Leclerc has faced a disappointing start to the 2023 season, primarily due to inconsistency in his car’s performance. The Monegasque expressed his hopes for the team to showcase improved performance this weekend. While he doesn’t anticipate a victory, he believes a podium finish is a realistic possibility.

He said, “Last year, we had a really good weekend, and I hope we’ll have just the same this year, but obviously we are not exactly in the same position. Red Bull is quite far in front, but we’ll try to maximise the weekend and hopefullyI’m pretty confident we can achieve a podium.”

Charles Leclerc has endured a calamitous season, scoring only 54 points in 8 races. This puts him P7 in the drivers’ standings. If he can emulate the strong performance from Canada, and should the track favor Ferrari, he could see his second podium of the season after the Azerbaijan GP. It would prove a much-needed morale booster for the Ferrari garage.
