On his 150th F1 start, Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz won the exciting British Grand Prix at the Silverstone Circuit yesterday. This marked his very first Formula One victory. The Spanish driver maintained his composure to defeat Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and 7-time Formula One World Champion and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton.
The race was stopped due to a serious accident involving Alfa Romeo driver Guanyu Zhou, but the Spaniard maintained the advantage on the second restart. After falling behind Max Verstappen, Sainz regained control of the race. However, he was unable to keep up with Charles Leclerc’s performance and had to give up the lead to him. Fortunately, a late safety car permitted Sainz to put on new tyres and overtake Leclerc for the victory.
Carlos Sainz gives his take on the battle with teammate Charles Leclerc at the British GP
“I don’t know what to say; it’s amazing. My first win, 150 races later, with Ferrari, in Silverstone — I cannot ask for more. It’s a very special day; a day that I will never forget; a very special weekend in general. Thank you everyone for the support, for the cheers. Lewis was on it today, I heard. It was one of his days, but we managed to hold on and I’m incredibly happy,” said Sainz after winning the race at Silverstone.
The Spaniard proceeded to describe the overtaking battle with teammate Charles Leclerc yesterday: “My overtake on Charles was clean and we wanted it to be. I knew that with my soft tyres, and with his hard ones I would 100% pass him, but I wanted to do it without causing him any damage.”
