Carlos Sainz wishes countryman, Rafael Nadal well before French Open semi-finals

Carlos Sainz congratulated Rafael Nadal on making the French Open semi-finals.

Carlos Sainz has a definite fondness for the sport of tennis, and there is absolutely no doubt who he supports: The man with the most Grand Slam victories of all time, Rafael Nadal. Sainz and Nadal go farther back than this, and Sainz even referred to him as a ‘friend’ once. Back in 2017, the Ferrari driver had been cheering for his compatriot and even gave him a racing helmet from his own collection.

Both of them support Real Madrid, who have recently won a record-extending fourteenth Champions League title. In fact, Carlos Sainz Sr. and Rafael Nadal are both honorary members of the club. Sainz Sr. was recently bestowed upon with the honor, along with Dallas Mavericks player Luka Doncic.

Nadal is the record champion of the French Open, winning it a whopping 13 times. He is widely considered to be the greatest ‘Clay’ player ever. Last year, titles had eluded him, but he has already won the Australian Open this year, and would now hope to extend his record at the top.

Rafael Nadal beat Novak Djokovic 3-1 in order to proceed to the semi-finals. The two had faced off last year in the semi-finals, but in that occasion, Djokovic had come out on top. Djokovic eventually won the whole tournament, by completing a 3-2 reverse sweep against Stefanos Tsitsipas. Stefanos Tsitsipas had beaten Alexander Zverev to reach the final. This time, Nadal will face off against Zverev in the semi-finals and hope to do the same.

Writing on his Instagram story along with a picture of the tennis icon, Sainz said: “A por todas en semis.” which means “Go for it all in the semi-finals.”

He also wished him congratulations in their native language, saying “Muchas felicidades.” Rafael Nadal has a 6-3 record against his semi-final opponent, the German Alexander Zverev. He would hope to extend this record.

After a strong P2 finish in Monaco, Carlos Sainz would hope to keep this run of strong finishes going, as he is currently 5th in the championship, and 33 points behind his teammate, Charles Leclerc.
