“Charles Leclerc has to win the next 3 races,” Tom Clarkson lays down the roadmap for the Monegasque driver to have any chance in the world championship

Ferrari think that Charles Leclerc can have a good recovery race in Canada.

After the first three races of the Formula 1 season, it seemed certain that the championship was going into the hands of Ferrari and Charles Leclerc. Ferrari came out so strong with a 1-2 finish during the season opener in Bahrain. Redbull had a double DNF in that race and Mercedes looked to be nowhere near the pace that Ferrari had.

After Max Verstappen suffered another dnf in Australia, it looked certain that the lead that Charles Leclerc had wasn’t going down any time soon. This all changed after Australia as Max Verstappen went on a crazy charge to win the next 3 races in a row. Out of the 13 races that took place in the first half of the season, Redbull have won 9 of them which includes the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix.

The advantage that Ferrari had diminished pretty quickly. Currently Max Verstappen has an 80 point lead over Charles Leclerc in the driver’s standings and Redbull has a 97 point lead over Ferrari in the Constructors standings. Tom Clarkson went over the team’s situation in the F1 nation podcast where he discussed some of the possible scenarios where the Ferrari driver could still be able to remain in contention for the title.

He has to leave Monza in three weeks time with three more wins in his belt”, Tom Clarkson on Charles Leclerc

“If Leclerc is going to do anything about the championship fight with Max, he has to win these three races. He has to leave Monza in three weeks time with three more wins in his belt”, he said. Damon Hill also had an interesting point to ad whilst on the podcast.

“They’ve got to be on a good run going into Monza. You don’t want to turn up in Monza having had your pants kicked in the last three races. By the time we get to Monza, Ferrari will be determined to come out of the blocks after the break, having put to bed all the criticism they’ve had. Although they had a summer break and the factory shutdown for two weeks, it doesn’t stop them using the telephone or the internet. There should be some interesting meetings happening over the break,” says Damon Hill.

The remainder of the season is going to be very crucial for Ferrari as they are in the worst position to be a title contender right now. It would require immense luck and skill for the team to have any chance at bringing the title home. Who do you think will win the Drivers championship?
