Formula 1 has reached to millions of new fans in the past couple of years. This growth has been credited to the Netflix docuseries, ‘Drive to Survive‘ which debuted in 2019. The show has received backlash from fans and even drivers such as Max Verstappen. However, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc has now praised the docuseries for benefitting the sport.

Charles Leclerc on the other hand, reckoned that the Netflix show has only benefitted the sport. The Monegasque driver highlighted the stark difference in F1’s reach before and after the first season of Drive to Survive. The Ferrari driver reckoned that this was a huge step forward in terms of the sport’s growth.
I think it has only done really good to Formula One because if you look where was Formula One before Drive to Survive and where it is now, I think it is a huge step forward.Charles Leclerc told FanNation in an interview
Leclerc acknowledged that the point of view in the show could be different from what it actually was for the people in the paddock. Moreover, the Monegasque claimed that the show makers had managed to create the series in a decent manner and allowing for fans to better understand the sport.
Sometimes it is a different point of view, I think, in the paddock compared to when you actually live a moment. However, it is done in a very, very nice way and I think has helped giving a lot of engagement to people that wasn't necessarily into Formula One.
Charles Leclerc claims Drive to Survive shows the personality of the paddock
Drive to Survive provides fans with behind-the-scenes action from the world of Formula 1. Viewers even get to witness revelations such as George Russell admitting that Lewis Hamilton’s exit would impact Mercedes. Moreover, it allowed fans to watch their favorite drivers unfiltered as they spoke with much more freedom than regular interviews.

Charles Leclerc highlighted that the show makers even focused on the people who were in a driver’s entourage. Moreover, the 26-year-old reckoned that Drive to Survive portrayed the personality of the people in the F1 paddock. This has indeed allowed more people to be exposed to the sport, resulting in an influx of fans.
Focusing more on the people around the drivers as well, and show a bit more of the personality of the people in the paddock, which I think is a great thing.
Certainly, Drive to Survive has had a major impact on Formula 1. The pinnacle of motorsport has seen a rise in viewership and interest since the show’s debut. Despite the mixed opinion of many fans and drivers regarding the content of the series, Netflix and F1 will continue to focus on the show for the time to come.
