“Checo is Mr Baku, he has always excelled at this circuit,” Christian Horner praises Sergio Perez ahead of Azerbaijan GP
Sergio Perez
Sergio Perez has been in stupendous form during the current Formula One season and it has helped him in securing his seat at Red Bull till 2024. Christian Horner has been full of praise for the awesome job that Perez has been doing for the Milton Keynes team.
While talking about Perez’s contract renewal Horner has recently said, “Pierre [Gasly] is still under contract but the timing wasn’t right to bring him back to Red Bull Racing.”
“Checo drove such a great season in 2021, he made it very hard for us to ignore, and he kept banging on my door and pushing and pushing.”
During the 2022 season, Perez has given the 2021 World Champion Max Verstappen a run for his money and after 7 races is only 15 points behind his teammate in the third position in the Drivers Championship.
Sergio Perez’s exploits during the current season were enough for Horner to hand the Mexican a new two-year contract with the team. Christian Horner and Red Bull are happy with what Perez is doing and are hoping that their faith in Sergio is going to bode well for the team.

Christian Horner is vastly experienced when it comes to Formula One and so far in his tenure has seen many drivers come and go from the sport. While Horner is happy about Perez’s renewal and the team’s performance during the current season, the Brit has admitted that his drivers starting from Azerbaijan should not focus on each other but rather on the competition.
“We need to take the fight to the others and Ferrari because they have looked very strong this season. Checo is Mr. Baku. He has always excelled at this circuit. A great first session from him, he has carried the confidence from Monaco. A great start for him” said, Horner.
Horner is well aware that their main rival for the 2022 Championship is Ferrari and after today’s FP1 session has made it clear that they are up for the fight. Perez and Verstappen have had a good start on the first practice day and going into tomorrow would be looking for a strong performance during qualifying.
It’s all to play for tomorrow and it is going to be fascinating to see who would be able to get the bragging rights ahead of Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
