Red Bull Racing began the 2023 season with a bang, finishing first and second in the season opener in Bahrain. Despite their dominance, team principal Christian Horner has advised his crew not to get complacent. After a fantastic pole on Saturday, Max Verstappen cruised to an emphatic victory in Sakhir, finishing 38.6 seconds ahead of third-place finisher Fernando Alonso. Sergio Perez scored second, giving Red Bull Racing a podium lockout.
Speaking to reporters, Horner praised his team’s efforts but stressed the importance of not becoming overconfident. “People have a very short memory in this business and you’re as good as your last race, and today we are heroes,” said Horner. “Tomorrow it could be Ferrari, it could be Mercedes, it could be Aston Martin, so I think none of us are getting carried away with the result.”
Horner acknowledged the unique challenges presented by the Bahrain circuit and suggested that the team would have to remain vigilant as the season progresses. “It is the start of a marathon, and the surface of this track is quite unique,” he said. “Let’s just wait and see what happens in Jeddah and Melbourne and some of the other circuits before drawing too many conclusions.”
Despite the team’s commanding performance in Bahrain, Horner acknowledged that there was still room for improvement. “The operating windows of these cars are very narrow,” he explained. “Every team in the top three looks like it’s developed its own theme, one team has adopted our theme and it has made a gain. I guess at some point it is going to converge, and that can happen during the season.” The team that has adopted their design was Aston Martin and it bore them fruits at the opener.

Horner’s Reminder: Red Bull Racing Can’t Afford to Let Up
Nevertheless, the success of Red Bull Racing in Bahrain looks to have influenced other teams to emulate their car design. While Ferrari and Mercedes have persisted with their 2022 designs, Mercedes has already confessed that they made a mistake and are trying to modify their upgrade package.
Horner, on the other hand, remained cautious, reminding his squad that they must remain focused and work hard if they want to continue winning. “We’ve got to keep pushing, keep developing the car, and keep working hard,” he said. “We can’t afford to let up now.”
While Red Bull Racing’s triumph in Bahrain was a remarkable start to the season, Horner’s prudence and focus on the difficulties ahead show the team’s commitment to continue to grow and retain their success throughout the 2023 season.
