Sergio Perez is in a fierce battle for the second spot in the championship with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. The point difference between the two drivers is just 27, and the seven-time world champion is closing the gap quickly. With five races remaining, Hamilton might just overtake Perez in the standings as he is in sublime form compared to the Mexican. Rumors started spreading recently that Perez received an ‘ultimatum’ to finish P2 from Red Bull.
Now the team boss, Christian Horner, has shot down all the rumors about any ‘ultimatums’. Horner said ahead of the US GP at COTA that there’s no pre-mandate on Perez and that it was never discussed. He also commented on the difficulties that Perez faces during qualifying sessions and his solid performance in the Sprint event at the US GP on Saturday. Perez finished P5 in the recent COTA sprint race, scoring four points for the team
But there’s no pre-mandate on Checo that you have to finish second or you won’t be driving the car next year. That’s never been discussed...He actually drove a pretty decent race; he made decent progress. Hopefully, he can have a good race and take some confidence out of that.Horner said, as reported by racefans.net.
Christian Horner laments the fact that Red Bull has never finished one-two in a championship
As the possibilities of finishing one in the championship are unsteady, Horner claimed that the team has never had such an amazing result. Horner added that the team has had multiple one-three finishes during Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.
Talking about the dominant RB-19 this season, Horner exclaimed that it would be fantastic to finish first and second in the championship standings in such a season that the team has had. Even in 2022, Checo lost the second spot to Charles Leclerc by a mere 3 points. Hence, it would be a great feat for the Red Bull to finish one-two.
With five more races left in the season, Perez has shown hope of better results for the remaining races. Perez has also promised a better result at the COTA GP today. Sergio Perez has a contract with Red Bull for the next season as well. All Perez has left is to prove himself worthy of the seat and aim for a contract extension at Red Bull after 2024.
