After showing some promise after the Belgian GP, Sergio Perez again disappointed the team with his results today. As this streak of underperformance seems to have started again, Red Bull boss Christian Horner once again made it clear that they will not part ways with Perez in 2024.
While Perez finished P3, a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane got him demoted to P4. Horner said it is easy to blame Perez when his competition is someone like Max Verstappen. He said that people forget that Perez is second in the WDC standings and is the only driver besides Verstappen to have taken a victory this season.
“He’s a Red Bull Racing driver. We have an agreement with him It’s easy to beat up on him when the barometer is so high on the other side, but he will be our driver in 2024. He’s second in the world championship, he’s the only driver rather than Max to have won grands prix this year,” Horner is quoted by Motorsport.

Sergio Perez explains the reason behind his picking up a five-second penalty
Sergio Perez’s Dutch outing was very unlucky for the Mexican. From being stuck in the pits when the safety car was brought in to his penalty, things did not just seem to go his way. He narrowly missed the podium as the five-second punishment saw him drop to P4 from P3, giving Pierre Gasly his first podium with Alpine.
Perez was brought in to switch to inters after heavy downpours started during the final stages of the race. He said that the extreme rain conditions were the reason behind his lack of control of the car. He mentioned that he encountered a flooded area in the pit lane, which caused him to collide with the wall and prevented him from braking in time.
“When they instructed me to use intermediates, I entered the pit lane which was flooded. That’s when the issue arose-I couldn’t brake, and I ended up hitting the wall, resulting in me exceeding the speed limit. Consequently, I lost my chance at the podium,” said Perez.
