Christian Horner picks Max Verstappen over Sebastian Vettel, claims ‘raw talent’ can outperform ‘hard work’
Christian Horner indicates he favours Max Verstappen as a better candidate for 'F1 great' status than Sebastian Vettel.
Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel
Given that Red Bull have been in a league of their own so far in F1 2023, Team Principal Christian Horner was faced with a big question. The Briton was asked if his team’s dominance under Sebastian Vettel was superior then the present dominance of the German manufacturers under Max Verstappen. Seb has brought four World Championships to RBR while Max is currently on his way towards a title hat-trick. Even then, Horner decided to pick sides with the Dutch lion since he has seen some ‘raw talent’ in him.
While speaking at a recent interview, Christian Horner compared Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel. He said, “Well, they’re just different aren’t they? Seb worked very, very hard, was a great driver, and it was a privilege to have him in the team. But you know, Max, he’s just got this raw talent and ability that is so natural, and he’s still so hungry, but so in control, he’s driving with such maturity now that we’re actually witnessing something very special.”
Max Verstappen brought Red Bull their 100th Grand Prix win last weekend with his thunderous drive at the Canadian GP. The prowess that he has shown has put Red Bull at the top of the Championship standings, way ahead of rivals like Aston Martin and Mercedes. In fact, seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton recently admitted there is a possibility that Red Bull will attain victories at all the remaining races of the 2023 F1 season. Thus, there is no doubt that Horner’s comments on Max Verstappen’s special talent are based on pure facts.
What is next for Red Bull?
Red Bull have won all eight of the 22 races of this year that have been completed. But when asked to provide an honest assessment of whether Red Bull would manage the first undefeated Formula 1 season, Christian Horner deviated from answering the question. He insisted the team will focus on one race at a time and he is not in a hurry to do that. Commenting on Red Bull’s chances of managing to win all races in 2023, Horner said, “Look, we’re just focused on one race at a time.”
Max Verstappen has now stretched his Drivers’ Championship lead over team-mate Sergio Perez to 69 points, while Red Bull are 154 clear of Mercedes in the Constructors’ standings. Horner said he will have a lot to assess, to determine if this season will be the greatest season for Red Bull in the history of the sport.
