Will Nyck de Vries be on the F1 grid in 2023? Will he replace Nicholas Latifi at Williams?

Nyck de Vries and Nicholas Latifi

After a new regulation from the FIA, Williams and Red Bull were seen having two new faces at FP1 in the Spanish Grand Prix; Nyck de Vries, who is a Formula E World Champion, filled in Alex Albon’s seat at Williams and Juri Vips replaced Sergio Perez at Red Bull.

As expected, both the drivers were not the very best in the Formula 1 cars, as they have driven only Formula 2 and Formula E cars all their life. But interestingly, Nyck finished above the other Williams driver, Nicholas Latifi.

This came off as a big shock to everyone as someone like Nyck de Vries, who has the most minimal experience in a Formula 1 car was able to finish better than Nicholas Latifi who carries a few years’ experience.

This certainly puts a question to all Williams fans as everyone knows that Nicholas Latifi is not a very good driver afterall. There were incidents in 2021 as well which saw him finish behind the Haas of Mich Schumacher and sometimes even Nikita Mazepin.

All the crashes and ill-driving skills that Latiti has shown puts his future at Williams into question.

Nicholas Latifi debuted in the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix in Formula 1 Williams, and ever since then, he has managed to score only a total of 7 career points. Alongside that, Latifi has had some of the major crashes, notably, Abu Dhabi 2021.

That was the crash that triggered the sagery car in the final race of the season, ending the race in controversy which made Max Verstappen win his first ever World Championship.

It is obvious that Nyck is a very talented driver, and has also outperformed Latifi in his Formula 1 debut, so could this mean that he could be a potential replacement for Nicholas Latifi in the 2023 season?

Although Nyck also has good relations with Alfa Romeo, but “there Valtteri Bottas is fixed for several years, Guanyu Zhou has only been active since this year and they also have their own talent Theo Pourchaire behind them,” said GPBlog.

As of now, Nicholas Latifi hasn’t scored a single point in the championship, and he stands on the back of the grid at 21st position; even behind Aston Martin’s temporary driver for the first two races at the start of the season.
