“Netflix sprinkle a little on top, but it is full of drama in itself,” Daniel Ricciardo on Drive To Survive Series

Formula 1’s recent boom in viewership is a result of the Netflix series, Drive To Survive. The series based on Formula 1 has aired 4 season so far and is currently shooting the fifth as the 2022 season continues to provide its script race by race. The Netflix documentary has received a divided opinion from the fans, the drivers and the teams on the grid. Most fans appreciate the show and are a fan of the sport as a consequence of the series. However, the other side remains highly critical of Netflix as they term it ‘over the top’ with the content it features in Drive To Survive.
The Red Bull driver, Max Verstappen is known to be highly critical of the Netflix series as he declined to give any statement for the show last season. Formula 1 heads to Miami Grand Prix and the McLaren driver, Daniel Ricciardo featured in the Daily Show ahead of the weekend. Show host, Trevor Noah wondered whether Daniel agrees with Max’s statement about Drive To Survive, in reply to which he said, “There is certainly a lot of drama in the sport and there are real rivalries. What I think with regard to the Netflix series is that they sprinkle a little on top, but it is full of drama in itself.”
Trevor Noah Puzzled By Daniel Ricciardo’s Friendliness Post Crash With Carlos Sainz
The Netflix series, Drive To Survive has tried to pitch a rivalry between Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz in the past seasons. The Aussie has been quite adamant about this being a false depiction on the show. The series also depicted a hostile environment at Mclaren with a rivalry between Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo last season, which also has been termed as a misrepresentation.
Last weekend out in Imola, the Aussie crashed into Carlos Sainz on the opening lap of the Grand Prix. The Aussie was quick to apologise to his fellow driver post race. Trevor Noah questioned Daniel about how he remains so friendly in such a fierce sport, about which Ricciardo said “I hated every moment of that excuse”.
The Mclaren driver continued on a serious note saying “I now have the maturity to see how much we all put into the sport. We are very competitive and there are only twenty of us in the world. You respect the journey that everyone went through. Beyond that, I don’t think anyone would apologize, but it made me, personally, feel better.”
Drive To Survive has definitely developed a love-hate relationship with the Formula 1 fans. The Netflix crew remain to be following the drivers in the 2022 season, to air the 5th season where they would depict their viewpoint of the sport. The Formula 1 CEO has also acknowledged ahead of the season about the ongoing talks with Netflix to discourage misrepresentation of information.
