Daniel Ricciardo makes cheeky Montreal GP reference: “All my favorite races seem to start with M”

Daniel Ricciardo has fond memories of Montreal.

Daniel Ricciardo looked good in Baku. He finished eighth, ahead of teammate Lando Norris, and may have even finished higher if he had been allowed to pass Norris earlier. Instead, McLaren chose to maintain positions on both occasions, and Norris also was told not to try and pass Ricciardo later.

This race only marks Ricciardo’s second points finish of the season, after his home race in Melbourne. Going into the next race, a win is fairly unlikely as McLaren is perhaps the fourth or fifth best car at the moment. However, the Australian can certainly achieve another points finish for himself to give him something to build upon.

This season and the previous have been rather disappointing for the Honey Badger. He has struggled to adapt to the car, indeed, it has been indicated that the car is entirely different from his preferences, and as such, he has been beaten by teammate Lando Norris comprehensively.

Daniel Ricciardo will hope for another strong weekend in Canada.

It was in Canada in 2014 that Daniel Ricciardo had taken his first victory in Formula 1. That is sure to bring back fond memories for any driver and must be a very joyous occasion. Starting 6th, he had made his way up the pack to finish above pole-sitter Nico Rosberg, overtaking him two laps from the end.

Now, the Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is making a return to the Formula 1 calendar after 3 years. Speaking to AutoHebdo, Ricciardo expressed his delight at the event making its return.

“All my favorite races seem to start with M: Melbourne, Monaco, Monza, and of course, Montreal.

“I am delighted to return to Canada after these few years. Montreal is a great city and it always has a great atmosphere, so I can’t wait to soak it up and use it to push on the track, it’s always fun.

Before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Ricciardo stated that he was looking to make full use of an unpredictable weekend in Baku. Ricciardo stated that it felt nice to finish Baku in the points, once again. Ricciardo has an okay track record in Baku, having won there in 2017, but retiring on two consecutive occasions in 2018 and 2019.

It was great to get back into the points in Baku after some tough races. It was tough, but the hard work and determination clearly paid off. I’m going to use this momentum we have going into the second race of this ‘double header’. I’m excited.

Daniel Ricciardo is currently 13th in the driver standings, level on points with Haas’ Kevin Magnussen. However, he is 35 points behind teammate Lando Norris. For McLaren and his own sake, he would hope that a good performance in the coming weekend can kickstart a ‘comeback’ of sorts.
