“Someone who will really fill the gap,” Daniel Ricciardo’s replacement on ‘Drive to Survive’ revealed

Daniel Ricciardo

Daniel Ricciardo is one of the main focuses of the Netflix docuseries, ‘Drive to Survive.’ The Australian driver provided the fans with insights into his life from day one of the show. Subsequently, Ricciardo became a fan favorite of the viewers. However, Danny Ric will be on the sidelines for 2023 as the 33-year-old shifts to a reserve role at Red Bull Racing. The show now needs a new face to fill this void.

‘Drive to Survive’ producer, Paul Martin recently uncovered the F1 driver who will take over Daniel Ricciardo in the series. Martin has named the Frenchmen, Pierre Gasly as the perfect fit. The show’s producer expressed the personal connection the Alpine driver has formed in the series. He said, “For me, Gasly has always been in that role as well. The show’s been on this amazing journey with Pierre and I feel quite emotionally attached to him.”

Paul further described that Pierre Gasly had been accompanied by the show throughout his F1 career. Martin continued, “We’ve seen him go through some incredible lows: the season where he was demoted [from Red Bull Racing] and Anthoine [Hubert] died.” Moreover, the DTS producer was confident that Gasly can be the right fit to replace Daniel Ricciardo. He stated, “I think he’ll be someone who will really fill the gap that Daniel leaves.”

“Without Daniel, I think there probably wouldn’t have been a Drive to Survive,” Paul Martin

Gasly’s victory at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix was portrayed beautifully on the show

Martin mentioned that the Alpine driver had evolved in recent years after a rollercoaster career. He said, “He’s grown on screen as a driver and as a person.” Additionally, Paul was hopeful to see how Pierre’s performances in race-winning F1 machinery as the Frenchman moves to Alpine for 2023. Martin expressed, “So to see him finally get a chance again in a competitive car is going to be great.”

On the other hand, the DTS producer acknowledged the immense contribution made by Daniel Ricciardo to the show. Paul said, “Without Daniel. I think there probably wouldn’t have been a Drive to Survive,”  Although, Martin mentioned that the show must go on with a new face just like a Television soap opera. He concluded, “It is a soap opera. Characters get killed off, they come back, new characters come on.”

Thus, it seems that Paul Martin is convinced that Pierre Gasly can fill the void created by the departure of Daniel Ricciardo. The Frenchman has been a regular face on the show. Fans have witnessed the lows and highs of the 27-year-old on a personal level. Subsequently, the Drive to Survive producer has perhaps chosen the perfect driver to focus on next season.
