Daniil Kvyat’s career in Formula 1 was marked by chaos from the beginning. Under the Red Bull Academy, Kvyat competed with Carlos Sainz throughout his junior career and ended up in Formula 1 just a year before the Spaniard.
Kvyat partnered with Sainz after being demoted back to the Toro Rosso team in 2016, and the two remained teammates in 2017. Their partnership was marked with bickering and fighting, and Kvyat revealed that their fathers even had to get involved to mediate things.
Today me and Carlos are really good friends, but when we were teammates there were some heated moments...We travelled a lot together, we had some contact on the track, and sometimes even our fathers had to intervene and say, ‘Hey, guys, calm down!’Daniil Kvyat said, as reported by racingnews365.com
Kvyat stayed on with Toro Rosso for the rest of his career, driving for the team in its first campaign as AlphaTauri. Kvyat never saw any real success after being demoted from Red Bull, eventually retiring from the sport.
Daniil Kvyat recalls showdown with Carlos Sainz for 2014 F1 seat
Red Bull was a highly sought-after team in the early 2010s, as the Milton Keyes-based squad had won four consecutive titles with Sebastian Vettel. Going into the 2014 season, the Red Bull Academy seemed the way to go for young drivers.
The 2014 Red Bull junior team Toro Rosso’s seat hung in the balance between two talented junior drivers. Daniil Kvyat and Carlos Sainz fought for the 2013 GP3 title, which would probably decide their fate in F1. Kvyat revealed that Helmut Marko had informed them of the stakes, and Kvyat eventually won the championship.
During the GP3 season, Helmut told us F1 seat is on the table, so whoever does best will probably get it’, and that’s when it started to be very serious. I remember the round in Belgium, where we started first and second, almost tied on points, and I had to get that win. I won it.Daniil Kvyat said, as reported by racingnews365.com
Kvyat went to Red Bull just the following year partnering with Daniel Ricciardo. However, after failing to perform in any sufficient capacity, the Russian was replaced by the young prodigy and Red Bull star Max Verstappen.
