While being on the ‘Formula For Success’ podcast with Eddie Jordan, former owner of the famous Jordan F1 team, David Coulthard named Lewis Hamilton an ‘outlier’ when compared to the younger drivers. The retired 13-time race winner also jokingly commented on Lewis Hamilton having security around him while strolling around the paddock.

While speaking on the podcast, the Scotsman questioned Lewis’ need for security, asking whether the guard may be there to fend off against autograph hunters. He said, “He’s the only driver who actually has a security man that works with him at the track,” said the former Red Bull driver. “I don’t know what danger he feels he might be in. Somebody coming up and asking for an autograph?”

Coulthard also went on to highlight the differences between Hamilton’s demeanor and of those on the grid who are much younger than him. Referring to how sociable the younger pack seems, often seen interacting amongst each other. “You see quite a lot of the younger guys, your Georges, your Landos, and whoever else, hanging out with each other away from the racetrack.”

Lewis Hamilton is under contract until the end of 2023. Albeit both parties, Mercedes and Hamilton, publicly announcing the willingness for a renewal, no official contract has been signed yet.

Coulthard has pointed out how there might be other factors at play while negotiating the contract, suggesting how Mercedes may have taken sponsorships that Hamilton might not want to indulge into. Mercedes will want a certain amount of time from Lewis for their partners… Perhaps Lewis might be wanting to do fewer days or have fewer commitments? Mercedes are buying more than just Lewis’ driving services. They are buying his promotional image and his PR image,” Coulthard was quoted saying.

He further stated that Hamilton’s contract renewal with Mercedes won’t be in trouble over this and it was only a matter of time before the team and the driver come to an agreement. What’s left to be seen is how the most successful driver in history lines up in the second half of the season with many counting on him to finish third, or so everyone says–‘The best of the rest’.
