Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport. 20 of the best drivers in the world compete against one another for the F1 world championship every season. However, critics have often argued about undeserving drivers racing in the sport. Now, F1 pundit David Croft has revealed that AlphaTauri team boss Franz Tost believed that two current F1 drivers do not deserve to be on the grid.
Crofty got the opportunity to catch up with the retiring AlphaTauri boss at the end of the season. The two shared a great conversation in the paddock. The F1 presenter claimed that Franz Tost discussed the current drivers in the sport. The 67-year-old was convinced that all drivers belonged on the F1 grid except two.
I had a fabulous exchange with him [Franz Tost] in the paddock at a race... He said, ‘Yeah, every single driver in this paddock deserves to be in this paddock, deserves to be in Formula 1.. except two.David Croft said on the Sky F1 podcast (H&T: PlanetF1)
David Croft asked Tost about the two drivers. The 67-year-old revealed his views clearly to the F1 presenter. However, Crofty decided not to disclose the names. Although, the Briton admitted that he agreed with everything Franz Tost had to say about them, including why they didn’t deserve to be racing at the pinnacle of motorsport.
I said ‘Really? Two? And who would they be? He said, blah, blah, blah, and blah, blah, bla. I’m not going to name them, but I could not disagree with a word he said about that one.
Franz Tost made notes during his final F1 race in 2023
Franz Tost retired at the end of the 2023 F1 season after being part of the paddock for decades. The 67-year-old led the Red Bull sister team since it was acquired in 2006. Nevertheless, the Austrian was dedicated even in the final race of his career at the 2023 Abu Dhabi season finale. As per David Croft, Tost even had a notebook open during the race.
The F1 presenter was surprised to see Tost take out a notebook before the start of the race. Crofty urged the 67-year-old to try and enjoy his final race after years of hard work for the team. However, the Austrian didn’t budge and continued to take notes which could benefit his team in preparation for 2024.
Franz Tost established himself as one of the most hardworking team bosses in the F1 paddock. The 67-year-old built up the Red Bull sister team and helped drivers such as Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel in the early years of the sport. Certainly, fans would miss the Austrian’s presence in the paddock next season.
