Christian Horner disagrees with Max Verstappen’s take on Drive to Survive Series
Red Bull Racing's Team Principal Christian Horner
It is no secret that world of Formula 1 has gained a huge following and new audience in recent years. One of the major factors dictating this attraction towards the sport is the Netflix series ‘Drive To Survive‘. The show has been airing for 4 seasons, covering all that unfolds during a Formula 1 weekend. Drive To Survive is one of the key factors opening up new markets for formula 1, which translates into new venues for racing. It also helps teams attract more sponsorships and gain new following as the world of formula 1 expands. On a whole this sounds like a step in right direction for the sport, but it also comes with its downsides.
The show Drive to Survive is a major factor for having record breaking audience numbers at the Australian Grand-Prix last weekend and at the Austin Grand-prix last year. In view of this, Christian Horner said “They’re making a TV show, but I think that it’s getting behind the scenes, it’s capturing content that the broadcasters aren’t able to get during the coverage of a grand prix weekend. So what it gives you is a small insight behind the scenes, and it’s engaging a new audience, a young audience, and bringing more fans to the sport. In America, it’s been hugely successful and that’s massively exciting for Formula 1 in general.”
Max Verstappen terms Drive To Survive as ‘Fabricated’
The defending world champion, Max Verstappen has been highly critical of the infamous Drive To Survive series. Criticising the show, he said “They try to pick moments throughout the season and fabricate it in a way. For me personally, what I didn’t like was about Lando and Daniel. I think they are two great guys, really nice first of all, and they made it look like Lando was a bit of a d*ck, which he isn’t at all.”
The Red Bull driver, Max Verstappen has accused Drive To Survive for “faking a few rivalries which don’t really exist”. However, the 2021 season saw a major rivalry portrayed by Drive To Survive between Red Bull and the Mercedes team. Chrisitan Horner expressed his views on how fierce the rivalry actually was by saying “I think there is respect. I’d like to hope there’s respect, certainly between the drivers and their teams. We have to remember Drive to Survive is ultimately a TV show, so they’re taking snippets and segments.”
Red Bull team principal further added “But of course it’s a competitive business, it’s hugely competitive – we’re fighting for one of the biggest trophies in sport, and there’s a huge amount involved for big teams. There are always tensions, there are rivalries, and you know, sometimes that boils over.”
