Mercedes has fallen off the top of the grid since the new F1 rules in 2022. The Silver Arrows have struggled to match Red Bull as the German team adopted a radical ‘no sidepod’ design. Team Principal Toto Wolff has blamed the team’s lack of pace on this design. However, former F1 team owner, Eddie Jordan believes that Wolff must take responsibility for this failure.

Jordan highlighted the fact that it is Toto Wolff who is the person leading the team, as all actions take place under Wolff’s direction. Eddie Jordan said, “He is the CEO, he is the boss. He also has the responsibility. It is happening under his supervision.” The 75-year-old slammed the Mercedes team boss for criticizing his team instead of taking the blame. He continued, “Blaming or criticizing someone on your design team is actually false. It is really hard.”

Moreover, Eddie advised Toto Wolff to change his view of the situation. Jordan suggested that Toto became a team player and actually accepted the failure together. He explained, “You have to be a man, it happened under his surveillance. He is the team leader. My message to Toto was that he would be much happier if he stood up and said, ‘Look, Mercedes is a team, we will always be a team, and we screwed this up.'”

Eddie Jordan mentioned that he loved to be humorous with Toto Wolff, as the friendly banter establishes a bond between the two. Jordan said, “I like to joke around with Toto, What about me and Toto? I love it because it just holds it. Sometimes you should tell me to fuck off! But despite everything, I would continue with that” The Irishman further went on to appreciate Wolff’s role in F1. He continued, “Toto is a very good addition to Formula 1. I think it has excellent qualities.”

However, in the end, Eddie once again stated that Toto Wolff must step up and take the blame for Mercedes‘ failure. Jordan brought up his own time in the sport as an example of how things are for an F1 team boss. He said, “When I was Jordan’s boss if the car was good, I received all the congratulations. And of course, if the car was wrong, you try to blame someone else. But you really have to stand up and take responsibility.”

Thus, Eddie Jordan is firm on the need for Toto Wolff to be responsible for the struggles at the Silver Arrows. The Irishman believes that this could provide a much better scenario for the team to bounce back from its woes. Jordan is a person with immense experience and knows the ins and outs of motorsport. As such, it would be better for Wolff if he decided to follow this advice.
