‘Everyone except Otmar knew of my decision’: Fernando Alonso fires shots at Alpine’s Team Principal before leaving them at the end of 2022

Otmar Szafnauer and Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso left Alpine with a surprise to sign his new contract with Aston Martin. As per the new reports Otmar Szafnauer, Alpine’s team principal didn’t know about the contract talks Fernando had with the rival team. Other than Otmar almost everyone in the team knew about the upcoming changes in the seats of the team. Alonso had another season with Alpine but decided to use his release clause and turn his back on the former team.

Fernando Alonso is expected to fight for the wins as he joined Alpine after taking retirement in 2018. Though Alpine got its first win, it wasn’t Alonso to pick the trophy up. Fernando gives a few reasons to leave the team he won two World championships with. Alpine’s project didn’t go as Alonso hoped it to be ultimately getting himself into a deep midfield team. The second reason was internal battles he had with people comparing him with his teammate.

“All of the leadership of Alpine and Renault, except Otmar, knew of my decision before Monday’s statement,” said Alonso.

Sebastian Vettel decided to end his career a few ago. Fernando and Aston Martin didn’t hold back having a chance to get themselves a tie. It only took the team and driver to get into a contract within 2 days.

Alpine then decided to get themselves Oscar Piastri as a proper replacement in Fernando’s seat. But Oscar bailed Alpine for a seat in McLaren creating a mess between all the teams.

Otmar expected Alonso to stick with them as the car and team have evolved over the course of this season. On the other hand, Aston Martin has been struggling to keep the given pace they have in their engine.

Alpine is fighting McLaren for the 2022 season, with Alonso’s exit, the team still has to give their best. McLaren and Alpine are on a level with points in the championship.
